We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeanine Centuori and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeanine, what do you attribute your success to?
Over the years, I have learned to take on projects for places and people with whom I have sympatico. If we are all on same page toward building and implementing our built public art projects, the process flows very smoothly. I have learned that enjoying the process in concert with great people makes for a more successful outcome.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I formed our design and art studio, “UrbanRock Design” in 2000, shortly after we moved to Los Angeles. We decided to create a vision for our work, and then seek that work in whatever means possible. Our vision was to be able to work closely with communities towards the creation of public art and design projects that expressed their shared values. We had no clients initially, so we made a series of pro-bono projects that relied on our own ideas, and hard work. We received small grants here and there, and slowly built up a portfolio of built and installed projects. We now have clients around the country in several urban centers and municipalities. We continue to build our body of work with projects for and with communities.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the east side and the west side, mostly for the beaches. We would explore shops on York Boulevard, and eat at The York, or another small cafe on that stretch. I love exploring the under-the-radar vintage shops on York. We would also go to the beautiful beaches of Santa Monica and the Annenberg Beach House. What I love about LA is the variety of landscapes from the gritty urbanity to the beautiful ocean vistas.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Russell Rock, my partner in life and work.
