We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenae Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenae, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Initially, I wanted it to be a vehicle to help Artists. Being an Artist myself, the moment I learned that even by just putting my own gifts out there into the world; I was, in turn, operating my own business. But successful businesses need branding, marketing, and a connection to the world; as well as to their audiences and potential employers. I wanted there to be a safe space that taught Artists how to optimize those aspects of themselves and of their careers, and it turned into SayQuoi Entertainment! While I still help Artists and Creatives strategize and make the most of their platform; I have extended my consultation and Social Media Management/Marketing services to businesses and Entrepreneurs; and I’ve found that to still support S.Q.E’s original mission, as so many of us have had to pivot and explore other passions for profit in the face of the Corona Virus.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
SayQuoi Entertainment offers a sort of a “third eye” on creative projects, Social Media and online presences, and offers support and morale; as well as a mutually beneficial business relationship by way of Social Media Management, Digital Marketing and Strategy, and Creative Consultations. I think it is important to marry one’s consumer eye with one’s business eye to keep a finger on the pulse of what’s trending, what best serves your community and clientele base, and that is what I offer with weekly consultations, writing partnerships, and social media management, marketing and strategy packages. I am obsessed with helping people cement, elevate and amplify their voice via their brand, and believe that our respective contributions to this world; be them artistic or otherwise, are pivotal right now. We have to have each other’s backs. We have to adapt. We have to move forward with positivity and light, and I hope more than anything that is what S.Q.E. has been able to provide for my clients these past wonderful few months. I am beyond excited about the trajectory my current clients are on, and the growth and overall impact they are seeing on their socials after having worked with me. I’m also excited to have welcomed new clients (most recently, I was onboarded as the Brand Publicist for a horror film entitled: “Sleep Talking”-anticipated to premiere next year!), and to help them with their branding, growth and online presences!! Having your own business is certainly not easy. It takes a ton of hard work and a devotion of a good chunk of time out of your life to set your own intentions, branding, marketing, etc. Essentially, all of the things I love to do for my clients, I have to do for myself and then some; and that tends to be challenging for me; as I would love to just throw myself into my contracts with others and not have to focus so much on myself. Alas, it’s part of the gig! I’ve learned so much with this endeavor, and I anticipate continuing to fall, get back up and learn over and over again. But most of all, I’ve learned that I love people and I love big ideas and thinking outside of the box to see them come to fruition, and instilling confidence in others who may not know how or where to begin.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Funnily enough, I’m not much of an L.A. girl; though I grew up in its outskirts and frolicked there often in my early twenties! I’m a bit of a “townie” as of late, and I love my hometown of San Dimas very much! I’d for sure take anyone coming in from out of town, up to the nearby mountain ranges for some excellent hiking and water/snow fun, for a drive through L.A. and some tourist traps, and to Old Town Claremont for some delicious eats, drinks and treats; and for a little boutique shopping if that’s their jam! Special shout out to The Back Abbey on 1st Street in Claremont. That place is amazing!!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I could not have done any of this without the love and support of my family….Specifically, my late grandfather Joe “Po Joe” Thompson. My family is my rock and my constant, my safety net when and if I am in need, and have always encouraged me to follow my dreams and do whatever brings me the most joy and is of the utmost servitude. I’d be remiss if I did not shout-out my mentor, Marissa Herrera….THEE Marissa Herrera! She has mentored me, taught me, supported me, laughed with me, cried with me, rode with and for me since being responsible for my being cast in a production of ‘In the Heights’ in 2018; which she choreographed and co-directed. I can always call her to vent, to bounce ideas off of, and to discuss the nature of the world around us and how we can improve upon it and/or revel in it. My amazing boyfriend, Joshua. He is my partner is every sense of the word… He gives me perspective, as well as encouragement; and is always there to listen to me, to uplift me, and to push me to hustle, but to not forget to take care of myself (which I have a horrible habit of doing…Rest, and take breaks, kids! Haha). I love you, babe!
