We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeff Runyan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeff, what do you attribute your success to?
In the words of MIT professor and author Angela Duckworth, “grit,” or an unrelenting persistence is the single most important factor behind the success of our brand at Runyan Capital. A dedication to the business, meaning, always placing the client’s interests first and operating in a fiduciary capacity are always top priority.   That means, “say what you mean, and mean what you say,” and make sure you and your client are always on the same page.

What should our readers know about your business?
Runyan Capital started out as a small one-man shop (me), which fulfilled a goal of mine, to own my own business serving others. As that success was achieved, I recognized how much I liked what we were doing and apparently, how much our clients liked what we were doing for them. As we realized we could reach more people, and continue to deliver a superior level of service, I hired staff to grow the business. This allows my management style to reach more clients, and for my team to recognize and similarly value the level of service that has made our practice popular from inception. We subscribe to the premise: under-promise and over-deliver; I believe in being transparent and straightforward, and above all else, operating with the highest level of integrity because our reputation is our most valuable asset.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In an ideal world, I’d suggest a weekend in Malibu with time spent relaxing beachside and concluding the evening with dinner at Nobu. A trip to SoCal would be complete with a visit to Beverly Hills to shop at GEARYS and a casual lunch for healthy Chinese cuisine at Xi’an. I’d also recommend hiking and biking in the Santa Monica Mountains to give a feeling of adventure like you’re out of the city, or to go for a run on the path in Santa Monica. I also spend a lot of time surfing at First and Third Point at the Malibu Pier with my two sons and friends. It’s a popular surf spot for beginners or advanced!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Three influential mentors in building my business include my Dad, who I often soundboard with and run ideas past. He’s really good at listening to me, and then letting me come to a conclusion without telling me specifically his advice. Secondly, I have been involved with the Beverly Hills Rotary Club for nearly 15 years, which has helped me develop meaningful personal and business relationships. And, finally, one of my graduate degree professors from the University of Missouri, Dr. Deanna Sharpe, who’s consistent encouragement and nurturing approach helped push me past the finish line in completing my thesis in my graduate program. I still check-in with her regarding the University’s Personal Financial Management curriculum to this day.
