We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennelle Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennelle, how do you think about risk?
Risk is definitely worth the reward. Every time that I have stepped out on faith and betted on myself, I reached new heights that I never even dreamed of. 2017 I drove across the country to start my career in entertainment. In 2018 I left my survival job after feeling stuck at that job and depleted creatively. A month later, I started as a Writer’s PA and worked my way up to staff writer in less than a year. in 2020, during the pandemic, I shot my mostly self-funded six episode web series. There were so many ups and downs, but we recently got accepted into our first (of many!) film festival! No one told me to move 3,000 miles away from everyone that I loved. No one told me what the future held after it didn’t work out with my survival job. And certainly no one told me to go into production during a panini and self fund most of the project as a first time filmmaker. But I had to take those risks to get to glory. I’m usually a planner, but some times you have to step out on faith and just DO.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a black woman writer and filmmaker whose content focuses on multi-generational familial, platonic, and romantic relationships from a black woman’s point of view. I recently completed post-production for my digital series, Car Therapy, and it recently got accepted into its first (of many!) film festival.

Car Therapy is about a struggling college therapist who moonlights as a ride-sharing app driver. On her rides, she is exposed to new people and new parts of LA and always ends up dishing advice, whether solicited or not. It is a digital comedy series that stars Ash Saunders, Jonnae Thompson, and comedic heavyweight Tony Baker.

You can watch one of my favorite episodes, Uncoupling, streaming at the NewFest Film Festival from October 15-26, 2021. You can grab your tickets here: https://newfest.org/event/shorts-dyke-drama/

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite spots in LA (in no particular order) are: – My Two Cents
– Tao in Hollywood
– Locali for a nice vegan breakfast
– Yamashiro for a stunning city view
– Earle’s on Crenshaw (their Playa Punch is amazing)
– Mastro’s in Malibu for a nice dining experience with an ocean view

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout my partner, Keenan. He has been there every step of the way of my whole filmmaking process for my web series, Car Therapy. Whether it’s donating time, resources, or a word of encouragement, he has been my rock. I’m not sure if he knows this yet, but he is listed as Producer for Car Therapy. This baby is almost just as much his as it is mine.
