We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer van Heeckeren and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, what inspires you?
Women. I mean, I like men. I married one. I just…women have shaped me to who I am now and still growing through. I am most inspired by the women closest to me and professionally I can resonate with women more, I don’t know, directly? I want to see more female stories and create them. Preferably the funny ones that aren’t glamorized.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
These are a few golden questions right here. (laughs) Art is so accepting and I think that’s why I gravitate towards it. Okay, I’m going to mess up a quote from a Robin William’s movie.
“Poetry, art, love. That’s what we live for.” – something like that.
And, um. I don’t know what sets me apart. I guess that I make art and all kinds, constantly. Oh! I’ve been told I have “energizer bunny energy”. I’m pretty much always up to something creatively. If it’s also inclusive, I am all in.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A week! Can we do all of Cali? (laughs) Alright, first off: BCD House on Wilshire for Korean BBQ. All you can eat and it’s amazing. I grew up in South Korea and I love Korean food like crazy. Then, probably beach? But if I’m being honest, there’s some secluded sand dune beaches in Ventura that are absolutely spectacular. Lacy Park picnic, Go-Cart racing in Carson, Ron Lynch’s Tomorrow Show, Howling Rays, those scooter things in Santa Monica. There’s so much!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Besides the incredible Bill Chott? Genevieve Joy is a joy to be around and lovely and funny! I would love to shout her out.
