We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenny Goldberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenny, how do you think about risk?
Well, to be quite honest, everything about choosing a freelance career is a risk. My work can get cancelled moments before starting and I’m not owed anything. Everyday I look for a new job. Almost every job is a new experience. I had no idea when I went to school that there were so many aspects of this job that weren’t just painting people’s faces. I’ve had to develop many skills but some skills I was lucky to already have developed, which helped me to feel like I had made the right choices and took the right risks.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets me apart from others in my industry is my complete and total dedication to do whatever it takes to learn and grow everyday. I realized years ago that having my foot half in and half out of this profession would never allow me to achieve the goals I had set for myself. Deciding to dive in head first years back is the only reason I’ve achieved what I have today.
The most important lesson I’ve learned from my journey is to do whatever I can not to dwell on what my brain construes as negative responses or interactions with folks in relation to my work. I used to dwell so heavily on what I didn’t have, instead of focusing on what I do have and what I have done.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite little known spot in the city is Franklin Canyon Park. I’ve brought almost every important person in my life to this beautiful recreational park situated in the Santa Monica Mountains between Studio City and Beverly Hills. It’s never crowded and always beautiful. Plus, the duck/turtle/koi pond is my favorite spot to connect with nature.
Another spot I always recommend people experience is Griffith Observatory. Its free, got a great view, and who doesn’t love looking at cool planets and stars? They always have cool exhibits there.
For food, I have to shout out Toi Thai on Sunset. I was introduced to it because the owners happen to be friends of my parents, but I later found out how popular it is and the likelihood I would’ve eaten there regardless of my connection. The food is A+, the interior decor is so interesting, and its open uber later most nights. Win win!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be where I am right now first and foremost because of my parents unwavering support. After that, it was my instructor’s at Makeup Designory. Without this amazing makeup school, I would’ve fumbled my way to figure out all the tips and tricks I learned at MUD. The school and teachers are very supportive after you’ve ended your program and I’ve been able to continue learning from them even 7 years after graduating.
