We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenny Voss and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenny, how do you think about risk?
I guess I could say my entire life I’ve lived outside my comfort zone. My parents divorced when I was young, we moved around a lot, and we never really had a clear path as to what the next day held. We were all just winging it. Every day was an adventure and most days I asked myself “why the hell not?” My first accident was falling off my brick fireplace and busting open my eyebrow while performing some song and dance for my grandparents. I turned every dull moment into a show, and I’ve successfully carried that attitude into my singing career and adult life. My entire life I’ve been taking risks to get to where I am today. Talent show? Sure. Singing Audition? Why not. Pageant performance? Let’s go. I think taking risks means being not afraid of the outcome, and knowing that you can handle it either way. We must be prepared to deal with things whether they land or fall. For me, taking risks means putting one foot in front of the other, and that is exactly how I’ve gone through life. Every day I take a step forward. I write a new song. I connect with a new artist. I reach out to someone I want to collab with. I reach out to a new venue I want to perform at. I try to teach myself something I don’t know. Whether I succeed or fail with that step, I’m still ahead. And what’s the worst that could happen? I’m in the same exact position as I was? Risk taking reminds me of the analogy of fear vs faith. Neither of them we can see, so what are we going to believe? I always chose to have faith in myself over fear. And I always chose to jump! The answer is always no if we don’t ask or don’t jump, so go ahead and get it!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a singer/songwriter who is on a mission to rise in the house music scene. I was born with music in my blood, thanks to my mom and grandma. But not until after college did I really start to pursue it. I spent 5 years gigging acoustically around San Diego to really get comfortable with my voice and the stage. From there I got an opportunity to audition for a big record label, which showed me that I had what it takes, I just didn’t have my own music yet. The past three years I have been diving into the songwriter in me, ripping my heart out and turning every single up and down of my life into a sweet melody. It’s been an amazing journey. One thing I will say is that there hasn’t been a single day where I’ve given up. Some days I get defeated yes, but every day I still show up and do my best. I’ve always been a doer. And music is something I will never stop doing. A lot of my music is self-professed. I’ve been on a journey of figuring myself out through my music, and taking my listeners right a long with me. Through my trials and tribulations of love, self-discovery, and enlightenment I’ve learned a lot that I know is relatable. Because of quarantine I was forced to write and record with myself instead of perform live at shows. This year has helped me tremendously. I’ve released 26 songs this year, and have written many more in this small studio apartment of mine. I’ve gotten two of my songs signed by major house labels, and have more exciting news to come in 2021. My music is mostly upbeat music that you can dance to and would hear under a disco ball, and I am so ready to get back out there on a dance floor soon. I feel more ready than ever for what’s ahead. This year I released my first full-length album called “The Sunrise” that is full of 17 unique tracks that I wrote and helped produced from start to finish. Go take a listen and let me know what you think!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being a musician brings me to LA often. My favorite places to go when I’m not in the studio are Bay Cities Deli for the most delicious sandwiches, Abbott Kinney Street for window shopping, Venice beach for beaching, and Brick & Mortar for drinks with friends. And there is just something so special about that hike up to the Hollywood Sign. What I love most about LA is that everyone around you is doing something cool. Everyone is on a mission to make something of themselves. I love that energy. It’s inspiring.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I just found an old poetry book that I made back in junior high and it was dedicated to “the people who have loved me and never let go.” I thought that was sweet and such a thought to have at such a young age. My family first and foremost for the music in my blood and the love that consumes me. They all support me and believe in me whole heartedly. Surrounding yourself with people that not only believe in you but also believe in themselves is empowering. I’m lucky to be surrounded by people who show up and try their best every day. My best friend Brigitte who walks through this life by my side and makes every single day a hilarious, intention-filled adventure. My six best friends from In The Bag Productions have inspired me daily to strive for out-of-this-world heights. My producers from Gallery 130 who have helped teach me how to produce this year and become a self-sufficient artist. Chris Diaz for believing in me, always pushing me to be my best and giving me non-sugar-coated feedback on my house music journey. All the producers and artists that I’ve gotten the chance to create with. My brother Adam for always checking in and listening to my songs on repeat, and of course for gifting me a nephew or two, showing me a love that is on another level. My “I’m So Chill” girls for always pumping me up. And I especially want to thank everyone who has listened to my music, gone to a show, bought a tee shirt with my name on it. The support I feel is out of this world, and I hope they all know I will never stop trying to entertain, relate, and inspire.
