We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelle Franklin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelle, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind my business was really about taking a risk. A few months ago I was in the process of creating scents for my candles, scents that I imagined and carefully curated, and then I lost my job due to COVID. Like millions of Americans, COVID disrupted my life. I was now unemployed, an uninsured diabetic, and a disheartened dreamer. It felt like I lost and for a moment I felt stuck. It was scary and honestly still is. I was faced with questions. Where should I use my money, Is this a good idea, can I do this, where do I invest my time, how do I continue to provide for my son? Questions, stress, and doubts were all I was certain of. I am in my 40’s, I am a black woman, a single mother of 4 beautiful black young adults, and a survivor. I have spent a large portion of my existence operating as a caretaker, chasing my dreams in the moments my attention wasn’t called to by my kids, work, or bills. I’ve come face to face with adversity in so many forms. Now again, I was a place of vulnerability in a pandemic. It was that moment I had to make a choice and a commitment. I made the choice to take a risk, and that was to commit to my candles and myself. I’ve always been creative and likewise, always believed in my talent. I knew my scents were incredible, I knew there was importance in my idea and creating wax and wicks that are Eco friendly. I hand pour all the wax for each candle, every label, packaging material, everything passes through my hands. Every detail is an extension of my intention. I will continue to commit myself to create my candles and incense because I know how special they are and my customers echo the same sentiment.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was once a Reporting Analyst/Coordinator until Covid hit. I then decided to test my talents and creative side against the world and give the world something that I believed was needed. PEACE! Already a published author, I decided to create something that would go hand in hand with a good book. A candle or an incense of course. Both are perfect in creating the atmosphere and perfect ambience where you gain peace and clarity. Making candles did not start off smooth.. Many, many, many errors and stinky candles until I created the perfect blend and the reaction of those who believed in the stinky candles from ground zero finally smiled and gave me their blessings that I was on to something grand. Once I saw how much people loved my product it gave me the confidence to keep going and not becoming discouraged or distracted.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being that I have only been in San Diego for going on 2 years, I would be exploring with my best friend but a few spots we would go to first would be to LA of course.. We would ride the coast and enjoy the view. Do a little shopping and hang out in West Hollywood. I cannot narrow it down to one specific spot in LA as I like to visit my sister, owner of BOLD Swimwear and bar hop when I am in the area. We would return to San Diego in one or two days- to do some Whale watching, sea lion Viwieng and lots of drinking on the rooftop at one of the beaches. Oh, not to mention we would make a visit to the Whiskey Bar in Mission Hills. The most interesting people are always in the downtown area of any city you visit. I love to people watch and wonder what each individuals story is.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To God the creator of this great universe, all my family & friends who believed and trusted in me since ground zero, my children and my g-babies.. I am grateful.
