We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessenia Mills and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessenia, how do you think about risk?
Risk is my song, ‘Dreamlife’. It is based on the struggles of pursuing my passions while still trying to stay afloat in everyday life. Left and right, I was asked by family and peers, “So, where do you work?” It was a simple and conversational question to break the ice, but it was one that hit home for me. What was I doing? Where was my new job now after quitting one after the other? Will I be happy? It had hit me that we based so much of our life’s worth on how successful we were at our jobs. But that’s all they were to me, jobs. Truth be told, I wasn’t happy. I was miserable and felt like I was going with the motions. Wake up, go to work, eat, sleep, repeat. My dreams and aspirations were put to a halt, and I was exhausted. Uninspired…All because of fear. What ifs? How? When? I took a risk when deciding to pursue music as my source of living. I was at a difficult time in my life when I decided to quit my 3 jobs and fully put my energy into being a full-time singer-songwriter. Why was it difficult? I was a recent graduate with no money, stressed about getting a job that paid more than pennies, and yearning to do what I love. I was willing to put everything on the table and pursue my passion for music, so I did. I do not regret a thing because risk is a chance. It’s that fear of the unknown but also the excitement of all the possibilities.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My genre is my own. When I write my songs, I tell a story for all to hear. I do not write to a specific crowd, I want everyone to have something they can relate to in their time of need. Rather it be to laugh, cry, or feel bliss. I create my music as an escape for those to explore their thoughts and emotions. I currently have 4 singles out right now and am about to share my biggest project yet. My first album. When creating this album, I remembered the tingles I would get picking up a brand new CD. As a kid, albums were like movies you wanted to watch over and over again. I’m from the 90s. Buying a CD was like buying a ticket to another world. I created this album to give those same tingles to others. Nostalgia to the days we would buy entire CDs just for the excitement of the journey, a reminder to why we love music.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite place is my home. It’s where family and friends are welcomed with sweet tea and biscuits. I come from a small town in the country. Growing up, I was taught to appreciate the simpler things in life. An ice-cold beverage, good music, and a story to tell. My home is where you will laugh, dance, and be yourself to the fullest. A vacation and safe zone.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give recognition to my parents for enabling me to pursue what I love. Their support is boundless and without hesitation. I also want to give recognition to my associates who have aided in my knowledge of music business. I have learned and am learning so much throughout this journey. And lastly, I want to thank my friends, family, and supporters. Their encouragement and excitement for what I do is a reminder of why I love being a singer-songwriter.
