We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Houston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Seeing black women behind a brand, that is ultimately creating spaces for us. We give a rather larger percentage to the world of beauty and there aren’t many spaces that we are able to see women or people who look like us or understand the struggles of hair and skin. For me, it’s empowering to be able to show other women of color that if you just start, you never know where you may end up.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sure, BEAUTYBEEZ is a beauty retailer that specializes in all things hair and skin. As women of color,  we give a large percentage of spending power in the world of beauty. We pride ourselves in completely revamping that experience by making sure to have conversations with our customers and letting them know what will work best for their texture of hair or products that are best for their skin type. We also provide premium braiding, body waxing, and facial services. We are most definitely a one-stop-shop.

We got through tons of hard work and dedication. We also had to fail on a few things so that we could learn from our mistakes. Though those moments of failures feel like the worst thing that could have happened, they all taught us how to create a space that we are proud of. This journey has most definitely not been an easy one, but I appreciate it so much more because of all the hard work that has gone in. There have been many late nights and early mornings, but I honestly wouldn’t trade any of them.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way is that even though you want to give your all to your brand, sometimes taking a step back and taking care of yourself is the most important.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a great question because my best friend is coming to LA soon for a week! My favorite place to take friends to in LA is Malibu, a good beach day at Pointe Dume with a trip to Mailbu Seafood before we head out to find a good spot is a MUST! Going to Catch LA and Joey DTLA is another must.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family is always a driving force in everything I do. Their motivations and encouragements have definitely been with me along this journey. My sister is owed a lot of credit as well. I’ve been in the front seat of her journey watching her pursue her dreams of moving to LA and becoming a fashion stylist. She is a prime example of LITERALLY taking a huge leap, trusting GOD, and ultimately ending up exactly where you’re supposed to be, which gave me the courage to do the same. Last, but certainly not least, I would have to give a huge shoutout to Brittney Ogike, founder and CEO of BEAUTYBEEZ. Without her faith in me, I would certainly not be where I am today!
