We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Vaughn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I love this question, because success is subjective. When I was signed to a major label, my peers considered me “successful”, but to me I wasn’t truly successful until I was in my thirties. For me – it means having a life I can enjoy with my husband (&kitty Giles) and in a career where I’m having fun, I feel seen and respected. I think the most important factor behind my success and my brand is not giving up. I never let me setbacks keep me down. I keep my eyes on my own paper and continue to grind. The best thing I can do is do the work and stay out of the results. I try not to get caught up in my successes or failures and find happiness through the work and not the outcome of that work, because that’s usually out of my control.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart is that I’m unabashedly myself. No matter the opportunity in my career (business or the business of art), I refuse to compromise my truth. That hasn’t always been an easy journey and I’ve accidentally burned bridges by showing up authentically. I’ve tried to adapt and be more agreeable and polite through the years, but being meek never did me any favors. I always considered myself a non-risk taker, but when I look at my life and career…all I see are risks. Being bold has always served me in the long run. When you’re building a career in tandem with your life, it’s important to remember it’s a marathon and not a sprint. Compromising who you are might lead to quicker results, but could leave you unhappy in the long run. It took my longer to get to my destination, but I am happy that I can be myself. The lesson: Do you boo!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
How fun is this, especially now that the world is opening up again! My must visits are Buvette, Mirabelle, & Augustine. All wine bars and all fabulous. Get a lyft and make it a wine crawl. Next stop: BreakroomLA. Time to enter the rage room and break things (trust me… you need this!). For dinner: Osteria La Buca – the best Italian in LA (& I’m from NJ, so I mean it!). For shopping: You don’t want to miss Shaeffer’s Garment Hotel. It’s mostly men’s attire, but it’s all so well made and the owner will pull clothes just for you. For pampering: Head to Skin Body Lounge Med Spa in Studio City or book Simply.OnCall to come to you. To party: If Disco Dining Club is having an event – you don’t want to miss it. Courtney Nichols is the Queen of all things fun – if you know, you know!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a shout out to Peace Over Violence. I learned more about myself and others through their Counselor Advocate program than with any mentor or therapist. We often feel so alone in our feelings and journey when we don’t understand our reactions or those around us. POV gave me an opportunity to dismantle my traumatic history and learn to listen to myself and those seeking help. I honor everything they taught me and wish them nothing but continued success in helping our community.
