We had the good fortune of connecting with Jf Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jf, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
That’s a good question and it’s not an easy one to answer. I think that someone who ends up in and artistic career such as mine, doesn’t necessarily choose it. You wake up one day and it chooses you. I was a little older than most when I decided to become an actor. I had tried a lot of different jobs/potential careers, but no matter how much I enjoyed it or how successful I was even how happy I was. Something was missing. I had a friend tell me to take an acting class, which led to my first play, which opened my eyes to what was missing. From the moment that it hit me all my decision making went toward following my heart and my newly realized passion, nothing would stop me, my career had found me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an actor, what I feel sets me apart is my looks. Not looks as in good looking, what I mean is that I have a very generic look that allows me to portray many different characters. I can be kind of a chameleon in my work which gives me many opportunities.
I got to where I am today, where ever that may be, by working hard, being persistant and not giving up. I learned early on that acting was a business and in any business, you have to work your way up the ladder, it was not easy, but nothing ever is. It’s ok to have to work hard and long to get to where you want to go in any thing that you do.
The challenges that I faced were trying to balance family and career. I got married and had my boys as I was just starting out in the business. This meant that I had to find an alternate income source while I was pursuing my dream of becoming an actor. There is not a lot of money when you first start acting, you have to get experience and often that means working for very little and even more often, working for free. I guess what I learned was that if you really truly wants something, you will find a way to make it happen.
I want people to know that I have a passion for what I do and I am just a regular guy a family man a blue collar guy who just happens to be an actor. I want to entertain and make entertaining films. I have no desire to be a movie star, just a working actor. To make a living doing what I love.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well there is so much to see here in Los Angeles that it makes it hard to decide where to begin. I think that for me, I like to show people that come to town a variety of things. Universal Studios is always a good place to start, I like to show them Rodeo drive in Beverly Hills, hit the Santa Monica pier and third street promenade. And any trip can not be complete without visiting Hollywood Blvd., seeing the Hollywood sign and a trip to the Griffith Observatory. And depending on what was going on a trip to the Hollywood bowl would be nice.
As for food, there are too many great restaurants to even start to break that down. I guess we would have to hit Lala’s Argentinian, Mel’s Drive in, one of the many Sushi places and probably pick up a Barone’s pizza.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I credit my late mom for supporting me when I decided to move 3000 miles away from our little town to the big city of Los Angeles. As worried as she was she never questioned my decision to go. Also my wife Rosana and my 2 sons ( Brett and Jared ) have been a great source of support and they have always believed in me.
