We had the good fortune of connecting with Jiawen Liang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jiawen, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My choice of career path today originates from interests I developed in my childhood. I loved quietly exploring new knowledge and crafting things with my hands. Initially, I used tangible materials like molding clay, woodworking, origami, and drawing. Later, when my family bought a computer, I experimented with Photoshop for the first time and instantly fell in love with digital doodling. Even though I was very young, I believed that everyone would use computers for work in the future, and I was determined to keep up with this trend.
Moreover, computers allowed me to surpass my physical limitations and create things that I could only imagine. As I grew older, I began to doubt whether making a living through art was possible. It wasn’t until I graduated from high school and started considering my future studies that I ultimately decided to pursue this path.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What excites me the most right now is that my work and life have become intertwined; work has become a part of my life. Because my work is so interesting, I am always looking forward to the new challenges that tomorrow will bring. Of course, these challenges are not always pleasant—sometimes I get sick from anxiety—but I believe that this is life. Nothing is always joyful, and life should have its ups and downs. Additionally, it is very important to persist in doing what you love.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my friends to some of the beautiful natural spots in Los Angeles. We would explore a series of beaches from north to south, from Santa Monica to Doheny State Beach. We would also visit some scenic and less crowded parks. I enjoy walking and chatting with friends, and when we get tired, we would find a place to sit down and take a break.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I believe my parents deserve the most gratitude because they have provided immense support both materially and emotionally. In East Asia, parents usually place a high emphasis on their children’s academic performance, hoping that everything their children do will contribute to improving their grades. However, my parents are different. As long as an activity doesn’t harm my health, they are willing to let me try it within their financial means, without worrying too much about how these hobbies might affect my academic performance.
For example, I enjoy handicrafts. Although they couldn’t directly participate, they did their best to support me in various ways, such as driving me to the market to buy materials or helping me with tasks that required the use of dangerous tools. They also didn’t view my hobbies with an “investment must yield returns” mentality. When I learned to play the piano, they did not expect me to pursue it as a career or participate in competitions to gain extra credit.
This support allowed me to explore a variety of different activities without the psychological pressure from them.
