Meet Jiayue Yu | Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jiayue Yu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jiayue, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I am a freelance visual artist specializing in photography and 3D rendering. Prior to this, I worked as an in-house photographer for an architecture and design firm – a stable, comfortable position that granted me a sense of security. However, over time, that stability began to feel increasingly stagnant, stifling the spark of inspiration that had initially drawn me to the field. While the freelance path may lack the stability of my previous in-house role, each new project serves as a chance to reinvent myself, to push the limits of my artistic abilities. It is a journey of constant growth and self-discovery, one that I believe will benefit in the long term, both professionally and personally.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I use film photography and 3D rendering as my primary creative mediums. I am trying to incorporate them together in my artistic practice, as I am drawn to the unique visual texture of film and the unrestrained potential of 3D modeling. The process of developing my own visual language and aesthetic is quite challenging. But I had a lot of fun experimenting and messing around. The lessons I’ve learned in this process is always remember to dig deeper into yourself – know your interest and find out why. Why am I attracted to this particular image? What’s so special with it? What can I create out of this particular visual element that I am passionate about? Eventually you’ll find out your own style.
In an age of rapid technological advancement, particularly the rise of AI-generated imagery, the commercial landscape has become increasingly saturated with homogeneous visual content. I believe my unique approach of incorporating both film photography and 3D rendering holds immense potential in the realm of visual storytelling that cannot be easily replicated.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m incredibly lucky to have a support system comprised of a tight-knit group of like-minded artist friends. We’re all young professionals in our twenties, united by a shared passion. This support system has been invaluable, providing not only emotional sustenance but also practical assistance in navigating the complexities of our chosen fields.
