We had the good fortune of connecting with Jil Chrissie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jil, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” – Harriet Tubman. This quote hangs on my bedroom wall to help keep me grounded and focused. Harriet Tubman empowers me with her strength and passion. Her dedication and power are all she had. I figure with all of my resources, education, and self-care, I should be able to achieve anything I have in mind. Also, she’s the greatest of all time. Of course, I have her on my wall.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I grew up knowing my voice could be profitable because my mother is a musician and singer who never stopped reminding me of this as a young girl. Although I started my business two years ago, I have always tried on voices with various inflections, accents, dialects, and tones that are different from mine. It’s a skill I’m steadily evolving. Recently I’ve been hired for animation projects, podcast introductions, product commercials, and more. I also offer audio editing as a package deal so that my clientele can choose to have a raw cut of my voice or an entirely produced work. As a comedian and writer, I’ve even given myself jobs from time to time. That’s what I’ve learned. I have to keep doing voice-over even if the voice-over work isn’t necessarily rolling in. I can create projects to keep my portfolio as diversified as possible. It’s good to have the work on hand if a future client wants to hear my range.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Anyone coming to visit me will have to hit the comedy clubs with me around LA. Those are the only places I frequent, at least before the shutdowns. I’m so addicted to the art form of standup comedy I can’t even think of anywhere else to go. If you are wondering which clubs, all of them. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been unofficially mentored by women like “Cree Summer” a highly accomplished voice actor and “Barbara Harris,” who is a mastermind voice casting director. I haven’t met either of them yet, probably because these women are like the Beyonce’s and Oprah’s of the voice acting world. Shoutout to them because without their dynamic work I wouldn’t see that I can exist in the spaces they exist in.
