We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Reger and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joey, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I won $20,000 on a scratcher in 2014. Decided I’d buy a professional camera that I had no business buying hah! I had no clue how to shoot but I knew I had a creative eye or whatever. Started photographing all kinds of things and then fell in to weddings!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been big on perceived value. So as long as I shared on my Instagram stories and other socials that I was out there gettin it then i’d be seen as successful but really I was shooting a lot of stuff for free or for pennies (compared to now). I never wanted to be considered a business so me being myself on my gram and just showing my real life, I think that set me apart big time. People saw what they were hiring, this crazy, obnoxious, fun loving dude who’d make their day so so much fun. Been in this for 6 years now and being published in real magazines along with tons of blogs, big big ego boost for sure! Makes me want moooorrreeee! I just wanna be famous dammit! But for real though, I came from two drug addicted parents and had to raise my siblings along with my own kids so this part of my life im really enjoying.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in the best freaking spot of California. One hour from everything! Beaches, Mountains, deserts and cities. But honestly I just love being home so if this best friend wanna eat, we would stay local and grub on some sushi.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I was about 1-2 years ish in to photographing weddings and then I met this photographer who was and is absolutely amazing at this wedding thang. I asked if I could shoot a wedding video for one of his clients for free (since it was my first wedding film, im big on doing things for free if it will further you along). From there I became his videographer for his couples. while doing photography for my own weddings I was shooting video for his on days I was available. From there I was able to watch how he interacted with his couples and so it began, he was my mentor! Hey Brett and Tori! Love you guys!
