Meet Johanna Pate | Stylist -Vintage curator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Johanna Pate and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johanna, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I learned early on in school that I had a passion for art and I was extremely creative. Art class was a place where I felt like my true self, I was free to let my creativity flow, it was where I could shine. I just wanted to create and that is where I felt the most alive. Growing up I would plan my outfits the night before and if I wanted something different I would take out the scissors and create my own custom looks by reworking pieces I already had.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a fashion Stylist and Vintage curator. I love creating one of a kind pieces by reworking vintage clothing and making it feel modern and fresh. Yes, you can buy clothes right off the racks and have style but I am always looking to create personal style. ‘THE MIX’ of something old and something new; style that reflects who you are and your personality. Your own version of art. Over the years I have learned that if you have a passion for something and really believe in yourself, you can create your own path doing something you love.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ooooh I love this question! Since sourcing goods and experiences is something I do for my clients and Vintage shop, I am always checking out hidden gems as well as the most up and coming spots and since a lady needs good food and coffee for a busy day of exploring I’ve acquired quite a list of favorites. My friend Amanda @common.standard and I would start the week off with them in Newport at Lido Marina Village where we would eat at Zinque @zinque and sip sangria by the bay. Then we would pop into the boutiques Jolie @jolieboutiques and Maxine @maxinemaxinestore, stop into Hairy Little Things @hairylittlethings for the best brows around and then end the day down the street at the beach to watch the sunset. Tuesday, we’d stop off @landerssupplyhouse to score some vintage then head to South Coast Plaza for a little more shopping. Afterwards, we would make our way over to the OCMA museum to view the new featured artist. We’d cap our day at Vaca, a delicious Spanish restaurant. On Wednesday, we would definitely have to start off with a stop at coffee dose coffee in Newport on our way up the coast to gorgeous Malibu. While there we would also hit up Surfing Cowboys Vintage store and grab lunch at Luckys. We’d wrap our week with a drive to Ojai for a couple of relaxing days at my favorite resort, the iconic Ojai Valley Inn.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to shout out my Mama. She was a single mother who raised us on her own and was also very creative! We would spend hours together in thrift and antique stores sifting through all the items looking for treasures. We would both get so excited when we found those special pieces and I loved sharing in that excitement with her. It’s funny because I remember wanting to shop at the department stores like my friends were doing but now looking back I am so grateful that my Mom had an appreciation for Vintage and introduced me to it at such a young age. I really feel those experiences with her helped me cultivate my eye for styling and was definitely instrumental in my passion to create clothing and curate looks and experiences for myself and my clients.
