We had the good fortune of connecting with John Edel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was attracted to the idea of being a freelance actor, thereby effectively a small business owner, that being my own brand. I love the idea of being able to “be my own boss’ in terms of doing a good job of doing ongoing training as an actor to build upon my craft, as well as preparing for and executing unique and creative auditions. There is only one “me’, and getting to work within the depth of my upbringing on a small farm in rural Minnesota, and incorporating my life experiences growing up in the Midwest has been an on going creative adventure. And there’s always something new around the corner as the owner of my business, something new every day!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The journey to where I am at has had it’s highs and lows for sure. One of the very first shoots I was ever on, I got seriously injured in a horseback riding accident, and I had to come back from that right at the onset. I had grown up on a quarter horse farm, and was more than confident on riding, however, horses are unpredictable, and circumstances came about. I love the fact that I’m often been called “the common man” or “that guy next door, you know, THAT guy”. I think the versatility in my look has allowed me an awesome array of opportunities to develop and portray characters, and tell some great stories along the way. Along the way, I’ve learned that ongoing training is so helpful, especially improvisation. Nothing better than being able to pull a really fun interpretation of a scene out on set if the Director gives you the chance. You can really bring that character to life! The John Edel brand is enjoying this journey!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My duty as tour guide to that visitor would be to show them a unique mix of the creative venues to enjoy, along with the vast array of unique and one-off dining experiences as well. And oh yes, the best possible coffee houses too! Take in some of the history, but also don’t forget about the most recent additions to the area as well. Not the tourist trap type places, the more unique and one off venues.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would say my biggest credit goes to mydad. Growing up , my dad was a community theater actor, and made time to do so while maintaining a full time job raising two kids in a small community where everybody knew everybody. He had a high profile public service job, and instilled in me the importance of community service over making money and “climbing the corporate ladder”.
