We had the good fortune of connecting with John Goolsby and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I discovered early on that I had an ability for understanding human emotion and to influence others. I skipped a year of high school graduating as a junior and started taking business management classes in college. I was working part time in a grocery store and by age 22 I was the most profitable department manager on the west coast for Safeway Stores. A few years later I could see the industry changing and felt it was time to start my own video business having really enjoyed photography and video classes in High School. My first job was a wedding and I watched the final product with the client who liked it so much she cried. I was hooked. Not only did I get paid which is a necessity but I enjoyed the personally satisfying reward of a very happy client.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I absolutely love it when a potential client comes to me with a challenge and I am able to visualize a solution. The most rewarding have been educational films such as teaching hospital patients how to use their mind and body to be less reliant on pain medication and charitable organizations that have been able to raise substantial funds because of the way we told the story of the good work they do.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The city of Riverside, California was at one time the richest city in America with highest income per captia which means we have lots of treasures to enjoy. The Historic Mission Inn and Spa is a breathtaking hotel with incredible architecture, art collected from around the world along with countess celebrity and presidential visit stories. We have the historic Fox Theater, a fabulous country club to enjoy lunch overlooking a golf course and tons of beautiful nature trails. And of we course we are close to many other must see California Attractions such as Disneyland, Hollywood, Santa Monica Pier, the Queen Mary, San Diego Wild Animal Park and so many others. If time permits we would visit Yosemite and San Francisco followed by a drive along the Pacific Coast.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I tested very high for math skills but had a tough time maintaining interest in school during the eighth grade. The first day of ninth grade, my algebra teacher Mike Beyries announces that “Americans are the laziest people on the planet which is why they are also the most productive. They are always finding ways to produce more with less effort…and algebra will teach you how to do that.” That motivated me and I got straight A’s in his class for two years. He was really the first to instill in me that knowledge could make your life better.
