We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Anzaldi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonathan, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Being an entrepreneur means that you have control of your day. This can be a double-edged sword, unless you are organize, prioritize and maintain a sense of balance. Every one of us has certain things that we cherish and make us the individual that we are. For me – there are three things that I know I personally need to do to have a productive day: spend time with my fiancé, exercise, and walk my dog. So I wake up every morning at 5AM and I enter somewhat of my “daily routine”. I make sure to workout first thing, so that I have a clear mind and feel energized. I then like to spend time with my fiancé before we both start our workdays. And in regards to walking my dog – I find it is a great way to clear my head and think of new ideas. The time away from my computer and phone give me an opportunity to take a mental break and really just be.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
NANAS is a family-owned business offering dishes inspired by Italy and Mexico. Our family originates from both southern Italy and central Mexico. We recognized so many similarities in the root of the cultures and the cuisines. Food is such an imperative part of daily life and we wanted to highlight some of our favorite dishes that we grew up eating, through NANAS.

NANAS was a long labor of love that actually got its jumpstart thanks to Kickstarter. We launched an aggressive campaign, asking for over $20000. We relied on our marketing backgrounds to push our Kickstarter out there via social media and outreach. We were able to achieve our goal and opened NANAS in January of 2021.

While there is no part of owning your own business that is “easy”, I will say that all of the information that one could ever imagine is so easily accessible these days. One can simply search for whatever aspect of business they are trying to learn about and understand the process behind it. Doing extensive research, watching YouTube videos, reaching out to personal contacts and building relationships through the community, have all certainly helped us grow NANAS.

We would like the world to know that at NANAS celebrates who we are and where we are in this world TODAY. Our ancestors all came from somewhere and through the decades we have combined our cultures and created new dishes, traditions and ideas. NANAS brings together and celebrates my family’s background by offering bright, vibrant dishes inspired by Italy and Mexico.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a crazy question to answer because I am actually getting married next weekend here in Orange County and I literally have 20+ of my closest friends all coming to join in on the fun. I would definitely suggest they stay at a spot in my hometown, Laguna Beach. I’d take them for a hike at Crystal Cove to work up a sweat and get some great ocean views. Afterwards, I’d take them for lunch at Javiers and enjoy their delicious salsa and margaritas, while looking across at the Pacific. Then we’d head to Newport and do some paddle-boarding around the marina – followed by some happy hour cocktails at Lido Tasting Room. Then I’d tell everyone to shower up and we’d head for dinner and live music at The Drake back in Laguna Beach. We’d finish the night at Mozambique for some dancing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The very first person that I’d like to give credit and recognition to is my business partner and my partner in life, George. He has always been rooting for me to pursue my dreams. After I was furloughed from my job in March of 2020 due to Covid-19, George was the one who pushed me to finalize our business plan and get NANAS off the ground.

I’d also like to recognize my mom for always having faith in me!
