We had the good fortune of connecting with Jongnic Bontemps and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jongnic, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Ten years ago I had a successful career as a Silicon Valley Software Executive, that was not 100% fulfilling. So after some soul searching, research and prayer, my wife and I decided to pack us and our two young boys and head to Los Angeles when I was accepted into USC’s Screen Scoring program. At the time it made sense, but looking back I can see it was a crazy and extremely risky move to start all over. But after pursuing this new film scoring career for 9 years, it was the right move and I am so much more fulfilled.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For 9 years I have been building a career in making music for media. After graduating from USC, I had to figure out very quickly how to keep a roof over my family’s head. After an unsuccessful Composer Assistant job search, a friend suggested I combine my technology experience with my new found music training and create a business. I founded Composer Tech with a USC classmate. We consulted and built systems for the top names in the film music industry. That business kept the lights on while we both continued to work with our fledgling film maker community. Looking back I see how critical it is to have a skill that can bring you income while you pursue your creative endeavor. It’s best if that money making venture is related to your target career so you can build related community and skills.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spot in LA is the Arts District. Littered with art galleries, eclectic bars, and restaurants, walking the network of crisscrossed blocks always leads to an adventure. My favorite restaurant there is Manuela’s. With their seasonal local menu, signature drinks and artsy decor, it’s the perfect way to end a day in the Arts District.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This shoutout is dedicated to the Sundance Institute for their loyal support of my journey throughout the years. Also would like to recognize the Composers Diversity Collective for the vital community it provides.
