We had the good fortune of connecting with Jorge Romero & Kat Avila and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jorge Romero, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Purpose LA was first created in 2017 by my wife, Kat Avila. She thought of the name while driving and having a realization she wasn’t happy where she was currently working at and really felt no purpose while being there. At that point she decided to open a small private studio in Beverly Hills. Curated to be a private place where men could come to relax and enjoy several services in one place. The menu included Traditional Barber Services, plus Color, Mens Facials, Manicures, all while enjoying a top shelf drink. After a year of operation, I joined her and opened a new Purpose LA location in Burbank. But with Covid-19 bringing uncertainty and inconsistencies to our brand new business, we made the hard decision of close doors 1yr after opening. After taking some time to think about what our next move would be, we decided to take a look into our hearts and ask ourselves what we really wanted. We came to the conclusion that we really wanted to build a team of groomers that could help us elevate the clients experience. With that in mind we took a leap of faith, took some savings, and opened a bigger location in the heart of Down Town Burbank on San Fernando Blvd. Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Building Purpose LA has not been an easy road. What started as an idea has slowly become a reality. Through the process we have had days of no sleep, we have literally bled from our hands and have tears running down our face on certain nights. We have had a negative bank account several times. Our savings have depleted to zero. We are currently rebuilding up our credit score again. lol. We have had months we did not have money for the rent, bills, etc because every single dollar has gone to buy whatever is needed to build the business. These are the sacrifices we’ve made and will continue to make because we know this is a meaningful opportunity! Somehow by the grace of God we are still here, thriving and blessed. The most important things we have learned during this process has been to always maintain our peace in every season, stay anchored in our faith, and that not every risk will work out but we shouldn’t let failure deter us from trying again! Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’ll when friends come over we always take them to traditional landmarks like Malibu, Venice Beach, DTLA, Hollywood Blvd, and Griffith Park. For night life we love to visit Toca Madera in West Hollywood, Catch in Beverly Hills, Goodtimes at Davey Wayne’s in Hollywood, La Descarga in Hollywood, and The Standard in DTLA. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our Family, Friends, and Clients. They were the ones that supported us through out the whole process from beginning to end. They came to help us create the vision you see today. They painted walls, installed tiles, gave us advice, shared their contacts, helped us financially when we needed it, and continued to do anything and everything to help us grow our business. We wouldn’t be where we are without them.
