We had the good fortune of connecting with Jorge Salmay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jorge, why did you pursue a creative career?
I actually started studying business before even thinking about studying music composition, but everything felt wrong. Everyone around me could tell I should be doing music and deep down I knew what I had to do, so I switched to Music Composition. So, the main reason I pursued music is pretty simple, it’s everything to me, it fulfills me, it’s all I want to do!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I write music for media for a living, I think I’ve had an interesting background, I started as the lead singer and bassist for a Melodic Death Metal band called Imperium and I feel like that whole experience turned me into the composer that I am now, very open minded, always looking ways to innovate musically.

I’m very proud of the music that I’m creating now, and my evolution as a composer, the only things that have taken me to where I’m at is perseverance and patience, and of course, my ambition and truly wanting to make it.

It hasn’t been an easy path, I’ve definitely struggled with lots of things, there are so many sacrifices whenever you have to leave your hometown, move to a different country/culture/language and start from zero in such a competitive industry. I’m always very grateful for the projects that I work on and I never take it for granted.

One of the biggest ways of overcoming challenges for me is to focus on my goals, I always tell myself that no matter what happens in my life, the result is gonna be worth it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I enjoy hiking at Griffith Park, it’s inspiring for me to see the staples of LA, such as the observatory or the Hollywood Sign. I tend to gravitate towards chill places, but sometimes I’m down for the adventure, if I ever feel like I want to go back to my root, I’ll go and grab a drink at the Rainbow Bar in West Hollywood, but I also love 4100 Bar in Silverlake or Bandini in Echo Park!

Recently I’ve been fascinated by LACMA and The Getty Museum, looking forward to go to The Broad.

Walt Disney Hall is another place that I love to go to! Places such as the Cinerama in Hollywood make everything worth it for me. (Hopefully someone will save it!)

And whenever I want to relax, I like to go to the beach, sometimes I’ll drive to Manhattan Beach or Venice/Santa Monica, depending on my mood.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Well, obviously my family (Mom, Dad, Aunt, Sister) deserve the biggest shout out for being so supportive even when it feels like the world is against me. But the person that I owe part of my success is Philip Klein, an amazing person/friend and definitely one of the best composers in town!
