We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Franks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
For me, starting my own business and working for myself was very natural. I might even say it was the only way things were ever going to work out. Call it what you will, but I have been one to challenge authority from the earliest ages of my life and from fairly early on I knew I was going to have to figure things out for myself. When a problem arises, I enjoy being the one to have to work that out as apposed to waiting on others and I enjoy the satisfaction of knowing success is solely on myself even with all of the added stress that seems to come with. A control freak? Maybe sometimes, but I believe it helps in this business.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart in this business is that as much as I can I strictly do this for my love of music and helping others create something they themselves and their fans truly love. I have always taken the gig that is more fun and that I truly connect to as apposed the ones that paid more, advice given to me by a great engineer/producer named Joe Barresi, and that has served me well. I believe artists come to me because they know its going to be a lot of fun, and when its all said and done I think those are the records/songs you remember the most, the ones you had the most fun creating. Running your own studio is certainly not easy for anyone, its a tough business and getting through most of the challenges that comes with simply comes down to not giving up when times are low. The biggest lesson I have learned is to enjoy your life outside of work or you will burn out. When business gets slow, go be yourself for awhile and disconnect. It does a lot for the soul.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Stay on the east side, thats for sure. Nothing good happens on the west side if you ask me. Los Feliz, Echo Park, Highland park, and Eagle Rock are all great sports to walk around and try great food. Stick to the smaller places. Im not one to give specifics, but if they done speak any english, the food is probably awesome. Its Los Angele, enjoy the weather and go hiking.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would have to give that shoutout to my mother to be quite honest. Without her support and push to do my own thing, understanding my path was very different, and always being there to listen or give advice is more than likely why I am still at it today.
