We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Kim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I want to be helpful person on UX/UI design field. Last year, I had a UX/UI web design personal project called ‘VAP’. VAP is an AI-based music streaming application, and its target audience is the MZ generation. I researched the music services preferred between Korean users and foreign users. According to the survey results of Korean users, Koreans preferred cheaper services to sound quality. And Chinese and American preferred sound quality to service price to the point where set the prices differently depending on the sound quality they provide. Based on this user research experience, I want to be helpful person on this field.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am UX/UI Designer and I majored in computer engineering and visual design. When I undergraduate school students, I thought that the most important thing of my career is my experience. So I found lots of various experiences in my life. I came the America 6month ago. and I’d like to learn all of things from here.

When I was in Korea, I experienced a branding team project at a really famous cosmetic company that researches, develops and produces cosmetics and health functional food products. This company was recruiting people to launch a new brand. So, I participated as a designer. I designed a logo and packages as well as created detail pages. I searched for SCI-level papers on ‘the effectiveness of Ferulic Acid’ to find reliable evidence that can convince everyone. As a result, I was able to create a brand called ‘Ground’re’ whose main concept is the grain. The ‘Ground’re’ emphasized clean and natural beauty.

I had an internship in the design department at a really famous fashion company that is tech-based on street wear brand. At the company I edited Summer and Spring season photos for their e-commerce platform and produced a video to advertise their clothes on the electronic display board. Through hands-on design experience, I realized the importance of understanding industry trends. I would like to learn what design the public wants and keep up with changing trends. Also, I want to become a helpful person in the design field.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I wish show to them museum. When I visited the American museum, I was really surprised. Because, there is real art work that I saw in text book . I always watched that art work in the text book. But here, I can see real art work.

Also I’d like to bring my friends to ‘Holly wood’ and one of theme park like Universial studio, Disney Land, Sea World Etc. American Theme park size can’t compare with Korean theme park. For the Holly wood, when I visited Holly wood first time, I saw people who doing various behavior. Drug, smell, artist, tourist etc, it was really unique experience among my before experiences. I want to teach about big continent to my Korean friend.

I think sometimes they need rest time. During their rest time, I recommend bonfire at the beach. There is lots of bonfire spot and we can take rest for ourselves. Watching fire will make us calm.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The most important thing is to trust yourself(myself). Every decision is up to you. Of course, sometimes you need other people’s help, but they don’t decide your choice. There are so many people to be thankful for, but the most important thing is the person who made this decision. Shout out to yourself!!
