We had the good fortune of connecting with Journey Shank and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Journey, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The main thought process behind starting my own business (JS3 Hoop Training) was to create a brand that allowed me to stay connected to the game after my career and to help the next generation of athletes. I take pride in being able to leave a legacy behind for my family and I believe one of the best ways you can do that, is to build something with your name on it. As I started the business, my vision was to be able to provide a service for others and create a space for athletes to grow on and off the court. I want my business to embody a culture that people can be themselves. As a trainer, a core value of mine to always be you and embrace the journey your on.

What should our readers know about your business?
In the summer of 2022, I started my sports performance training business that focuses on skill development for all athletes. In the fall of 2021, I tore my ACL and meniscus, which put me in a position where I could either quit or pivot in a direction that would positively impact others. Although I was devastated about the injury, I knew that I had a gift and value to add to the game. From a business standpoint, starting wasn’t easy, but staying committed and determined to create something bigger than myself keeps me motivated. What excites me the most about my business is the opportunity I get to affect change in the lives of the athletes I am able to interact with. Every training session, I see my athletes get better and that is my whole purpose.

I believe what I want the world to know about me and my brand is that I am focused on providing a space for athletes to not only grow in their sport, but become better people. I want my story to inspire others to strive for their own greatness and not be afraid to create something even if they don’t know where to start.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being born and raised in Los Angeles, California I would say it is a great place to visit And there are many great things to check out. Personally, I love the beach and taking in the good weather. You can’t go wrong with driving down PCH or Rodeo Drive for a good bite to eat. Let’s say it’s a weeklong trip. I would definitely hang out in a beach town where I could shop and hopefully play a little outdoor basketball.. I’m a person of simple pleasures, so as long as I am in good company and the sun is out, I have no complaints.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shout out to my family for being my support system. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them and I’m grateful for the many sacrifices each person made to allow me to find my own success. I’d like to also recognize the many coaches and mentors that invested in me throughout my basketball career and gave me the knowledge to pass down to the next generation of athletes. Specifically, my trainers, Jordan Lopez and Donald Harrison. My story is just beginning, and I am aware that I didn’t get here without a great team supporting me along the way.
