We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy Voltaire and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joy, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my personal/business brand, is our shared ability to be relevant and relatable to our audience (community) when presenting topics in the area of financial education. When I create or post content for my personal brand (Trendy Savings), I often become more transparent or vulnerable to speak to the pain and needs of my community from a real & relatable place. I also love to use dance and my comedic personality to ease them into, what can be considered difficult but necessary conversations. I believe my heart for people, passion for teaching and desire to build community is what ultimately makes my brand successful.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am the proud the founder of Trendy Educational Services LLC, a company created to assist in closing the racial wealth gap, by providing relatable financial & educational literacy to black families and driving economic change within minority communities. More recently, I founded and helped to establish, Trendy Educational Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization, devoted to ensuring that black families and low-income communities have access to free and affordable financial education.

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education and am currently enrolled in the Nationally Certified Financial Education Instructor Training Program (CFEI). I left a career in teaching over 7 years ago now to pursue entrepreneurship and it has not been an easy road. Although I absolutely love what I do, it doesn’t come without challenges. I made the poor choice to start this path to business ownership, with little to no money savings or a plan. I overcame these obstacles my working diligently towards perfecting my craft and becoming a student of anything related to business. I am a lifelong learner and believe that I although I will never master everything, I will live out my life trying to be the best at what I do.

I’ve worked with over 100 families (in the past 6 years) through workshops, online classes, and membership groups; helping them to reduce their household expenses and manage their money better. I have a great passion for teaching individuals and families how to save and manage their personal finances better because I failed so miserably at it. I don’t want others to unnecessarily experience the pain of living paycheck to paycheck and growing deeper into debt, due to a lack of education and poor financial decisions. My biggest accomplishments are within my customer’s & community member’s success stories.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you are looking for a good breakfast spot, with budget friendly prices and great service, consider Amy’s Omelette House in Cherry Hill or LesbieVeggies, in Audubon, for all my fellow vegans or plant-based eaters. Now if you’re vacationing just across the bridge or would like to visit Philadelphia, I recommend Green Eggs Café for the best french toast or red velvet pancakes.
One of my favorite spots to dine out at, prior to the pandemic was Warmdaddy’s, a very small and intimate venue in the heart of Old City Philadelphia. They have some of the best soul food and LIVE music/performances in the area. This is a great place to visit during happy hour or as a couple, looking for a romantic night out on the town!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many different people who have not only inspired me but consistently supported me on this journey, that it’s hard to choose just one person. However, Temica Gross was one of the first of several mentors and or coaches that truly impacted my journey early on. In 2016, as new content creator and aspiring entrepreneur, Temica Gross (business & branding coach) attended a few of my periscope livestream sessions and was immediately able to see things within me, that I didn’t initially see for myself.
Eventually we connected on a business and personal level, which led to her helping me develop my first eBook and online course. Both products were created to help women coupon, strategically shop and save money on their grocery bills. This was my initial passion, which led me to my current mission of helping families manage their money better through budgeting & savings strategies.
