We had the good fortune of connecting with JR Luat and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JR, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
Ever since I was young, I loved the movies and always found myself engrossed in storytelling and cinematography. Growing up, the end goal for me was to be a Creative Director at a creative agency specializing in entertainment marketing. It was my dream to be a part of the creative process — a goal that I know is just a stones throw away this year.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
To achieve my goal of becoming a Director, however, was no easy feat of course and did not come without its hardships. I started small working for companies like Wetzel’s Pretzels, Tapioca Express, and Blends (shoe store). I started my journey by leaving the comforts of San Diego and finding myself in Los Angeles seeking creative opportunities. After many years of freelance graphic designing for clothing companies, in 2014, I finally landed a job at a local print house in Monterey Park (Continental Colorcraft) where I got to work with clients from Paramount Pictures and got the chance to work on a variety of marketing materials for features films. I then moved into the audio and video realm of marketing in 2017 by taking on a International Marketing Manager role for the Picture Production Company in Beverly Hills. A challenging role where I learned a great deal about myself, my triumphs, and my failures. It was here where I met a handful of wonderful people who showed me unfiltered support, love, and encouragement in this unyielding industry. It was because of the group of people that this article is dedicated to that I was able to overcome all the challenges I faced. The lesson here is that good things and goals can be achieved with hard work, determination, a good support system, and A LOT of patience. I would like the world to know that it’s okay to take a chance on the things you love. It may seem scary, uncertain, and even difficult at first but it’ll be worth it in the end because of the people you meet and the lessons you learn along the way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My first recommendation would be to visit the Rodeo 39 Public Marketplace in Stanton, CA. They have a variety of delicious asian-fusion food, boba, and desserts to choose from – among other things. They also have a pretty outdoor seating area where you can enjoy your food and admire the modern decor. My second recommendation for a more low key experience would be to pick up lunch to-go from Nguyen’s Kitchen in Orange County and get the Crawfish Pasta. Afterwards, drive over to Mike Ward Community Park, lay out a blanket and enjoy your food in on the edge of the grassy field under a shady tree. It really couldn’t get any more relaxing than that. Finally, for the plant lover, I would recommend visiting Flora Clay in Alhambra, CA. They have a wide assortment of plants, succulents, and propagation kits that would make great additions to your growing plant collection or even housewarming gifts. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It goes without saying that the key players that showed effort, support, and love to my success are my mom and dad, Amor and Marivic Luat and friends and colleagues Alexandria Galick, Jesse Mandapat, Nancy Carreon, Jon Wang, Evelyn Kleinkopf, Naomi Hernandez, John Kang, Tabatha Roche, Kandace Wilson, Kelvin Huynh, James Suh, Jonathan Topacio, Jonathan Delosreyes, Mark Estanislao, and Ramon Phonethepha. It was because of them that I was able to push myself to accomplish and endure more than I could have ever imagined especially during the unprecedented times of 2020 with Covid-19. It will also be because of them that I can face the uncertainty 2021 with confidence and take the next steps into my professional career. Mom, dad, Alex, Jesse, Nancy and the rest of you, thank you so much for everything. You are all truly blessings in my life.
