We had the good fortune of connecting with Juan Abella and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Juan, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m Juan Abella, from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I was raised in a big traditional family which gave me a lot of values, support and skills that I use in my every day life. My father being a businessman and my mother a plastic artist, I grew up with a duality, a mix of two worlds. After finishing high school, I studied both Advertising and Traditional Guitar studies, as careers. After one year, and realizing those were not the perfect fit for me, I embarked in a new adventure and enrolled in Business in another university, and Contemporary Guitar studies. This experience has allowed me to understand better both my current jobs, being a Marketing Manager for Latin alternative artists at Criteria Entertainment in Los Angeles, California, and a singer-songwriter as Vicious Rooster. Being on both sides of the counter helps me get a wholesome perspective of the music industry, allowing me to have a better understanding of the artists, as clients and peers.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a rock singer-songwriter by nature. I have a solo project as Vicious Rooster, where I perform my original compositions in the genres of rock, with some country, blues and grunge. I also perform as a guitar player and backing vocalist for other artists, currently playing in the Los Angeles area. I believe 2024 will be a great year for my music and for me as a performer. Being an artist is never easy, it takes blood and sweat, effort, sleepless nights and believing in your art. You are an entrepreneur selling your product. I’ve learned one of the most important things to pursue a career in any form of entertainment is to be visible and consistent, independently of your audience or location. I would like people to listen to my music and connect with me. You can find my music on every platform and on my website: www.viciousrooster.com I will be performing at NextFestLA festival at the LA County Fair next May 25th. Come join us!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, I love nature, music and cool places! I would definitely take them hiking to one the various points Los Angeles has to offer. I would say Runyon Canyon, if he/she was a beginner, Topanga , Pacific Palisades or Eaton Canyon Falls for a longer hike! In terms of food, I absolutely love poke, Chinese and Mexican food, so we’d had to make a stop at those kind of places at least once. Other than that, the Farmer’s Market at The Grove or a pizza at The Rainbow Bar & Grill. I would get them to a show, could be a big concert at the Forum or an intimate performance at the Hotel Café. Last but not least, a peek of the Hollywood bar scene at places like No Vacancy, Good Times at Davey Wayne’s or Desert 5 Spot.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I will allow myself to do two shoutouts. The first one, to my family, who has always been extremely supportive towards my career and my art, encouraging me to achieve my goals and dreams. Second shoutout would be to Diana Rodríguez, CEO of Criteria Entertainment, who has shaped me as a professional in the entertainment business and has put lots of her time and effort to give me all the tools I need to excel in the area. I will forever consider her my mentor in this career I chose, showing me all sides of the business and giving me countless lessons to improve, always setting an example, teaching me to be attentive to potential opportunities. Also, the importance of social skills, the lack of prejudice, the great value teamwork has, with kindness and humility above all things.
