We had the good fortune of connecting with Junyoung Jung and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Junyoung, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to be a musician when I was 5 years old, and I have always been a person who makes something creative so far. Not only playing and composing music but also writing essay or taking photograph and video was a significant part of my life. From 2007 to 2009, I was in a military for 2 years because all men have to do their military service in South Korea. Although I was in a military band as a musician, I had to do something not creative such as paperwork. During that time, I realized that I should be a person who has a creative job because I was always happy when I make something new. I hope I will be a creative person until I die.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a music composer. My specialty is writing music for film and television. In South Korea, I studied music composition at Seoul Institute of the Arts and worked in the military band as an orchestrator and a keyboard player. After graduation, I have worked in Korean film and television industries as a film composer for 7 years, so I was able to compose numerous original soundtracks for Korean movies, TV series, animated features and documentaries. In 2019, I came to Los Angeles to study film scoring at UCLA Extension. It was a huge decision in my life because I had to pause so many careers in my country. However, I have always dreamed about studying film scoring and working in Hollywood since I decided to become a film composer when I was 17 years old.

I recently scored Korean movie “Rolling Girl” as a music composer. This movie is director Minseung Kwak’s second feature film and has the story about a daughter who unexpectedly takes charge of her mother’s Kim-bob (Korean seaweed roll) restaurant. The entire story is set in the pandemic situation, and everyone in the movie is struggling with COVID-19 effects. This film was screened in Jeonju International Film Festival last May as a world premiere and is also planning to have screenings at other film festivals this year. I hope many audiences will be able to watch this film at the theater soon.

Thus, I jumped into the challenge and started traveling the way that I have never been to before. For the professional world, it can’t be easy to become a professional person. There has been lots of pain and frustration for several years since I started my professional career, but there were also pleasure and achievement. In my experience, pain and joy are repeating constantly. Now I am able to enjoy the painful time because it is the signal that good news are coming after this hard time. This is one of the ways that I can overcome the challenge and keep moving forward.

I personally like the quote “Life was always a matter of waiting for the right moment to act” from Paulo Coelho. I believe that everyone will have a huge opportunity to succeed, but we never know when the time is coming. If I am well prepared, I will definitely get a chance to succeed. Someone gets success very earlier, and someone succeeds in their business much later than others. Therefore, the most important thing is how much I am prepared to take the opportunity when it comes.

I really love traveling and have been to 30 countries, so I was able to experience diverse culture and people. I have learned that music is the one universal language which can connect me to the world through my journey, so I would love to travel around the world in search of new people and amazing sounds.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friends visit LA, there are many places where I would take them. First of all, I want to show them the beautiful beach. I will definitely go to Hermosa beach and get some brunch. Hermosa beach is one of my favorite beach in Southern California and is absolutely beautiful in sunset time. Also, I would like to take them to the Griffith Observatory which is best place to see the night view of Los Angeles. There are many good places to eat and drink in LA. I often go to Thai Town and visit the restaurant Thai Patio on Hollywood Blvd. Their food is absolutely best Thai food in LA. We can also go to Korea town to eat authentic Korean food. In fact, LA has the biggest Korea town in the US. I also would like to introduce them my neighborhood. I am living in Sherman Oaks and love this valley area. There are some beautiful cafe and bakery in my neighborhood. The Coffee Roaster is one of my favorite cafe, and they always serve fresh coffee. Plus staffs are extremely friendly. In addition, Porto’s Bakery and Cafe on West Magnolia Blvd is lovely place to go get some Cuban sandwich and dessert.
Furthermore, I personally like nature and camping, so I definitely want to take them to the national park. California has many beautiful national parks. We could go to Sequoia National Park or Joshua National Park. It would be great to go to Sequoia National park in Spring and Summer, and Fall is a perfect season to go to Joshua National park. I really want to show them beautiful and enormous nature in California!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In 2014, I watched the movie ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ and was really impressed by the character and story. In the movie, Walter’s world shifts from imagination to reality. He always willing to try something which seems to be impossible and finally achieve it. After watching this movie, I endeavored to be an adventurous person, always seeking new experiences. ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ undoubtedly changed my life.
