Meet Kait Lucas: Marketing Strategist, Writer & Produce Enthusiast

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kait Lucas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kait, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk has been a huge factor in my career thus far. In fact, I like to think of my career as strung together by a bunch of little leaps of faith. I have always craved stability and predictability, but had never thrived in a 9 to 5 corporate environment, so my freelance career required me to take that leap of faith and let go of that need for control. I think life has been trying to teach me that for years now, and will continue to be an ongoing lesson for me: how to ebb and flow with life instead of always trying to predict and control it. Having the strength to simply surrender to the unpredictability of one’s life is sort of a risk in and of itself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career path certainly wasn’t easy, and I think it is far from over. I went to school for photography and painting, so I bring the perspectives I’ve learned from art school to everything I do. Right out of college I worked for an art gallery and very quickly realized it was not what I wanted to be doing, so I shifted. I have always been involved in social media and marketing in some capacity, but didn’t realize I could make a career out of it until a few years ago. It’s an exciting field to be in because it is ever-evolving, and there are so many different aspects to it. Content creation, copywriting, marketing strategies, public relations, and so on; it’s an industry that sort of forces you to be able to do it all. I’m thankful for the variation, it is rarely boring.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Monday I would take them for a hike at my favorite trail, Switzer Falls, and in the evening have a lovely meal at Hippo in Highland Park. Tuesday morning we would walk around Huntington Gardens to see the flowers and plants, then head to Silver Lake for lunch at Tartine and have a quick browse around Mohawk General Store. Wednesday we’d go west and visit Leo Carrillo Beach in Malibu, then maybe go to Gjusta for a bite to eat, and Gjusta Goods next store to swoon over all the beautiful homewares. Thursday we’d order carry-out lunch from Dune in Atwater and have a plein air meal in a shady area in Griffith Park, and in the evening visit the South Pasadena farmer’s market. Friday morning we’d visit The Iliad, the most incredible used bookshop in North Hollywood, and stop by Cookbook Market on our way home to get dinner provisions. Saturday I’d drag them to a morning yoga class at Kinship Yoga, and in the evening we’d get a drink at The Hermosillo or its sister wine bar, Holcomb. Sunday morning we would make coffee to go and walk the Arroyo Seco trail in Pasadena.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have been extremely lucky to have been introduced to such wonderful people throughout the various stages in my career. During my time at Need Supply, I was introduced to Krystle Kemp, Fashion Director-turned digital marketing genius, and she has been sort of a mentor to me; I have learned so much from her over the course of this year and she really gave me the confidence to pursue this full time. Also, the writer Anne Lamott. Sadly I don’t know her personally (I wish) but her book about writing and life, Bird by Bird, helped me so much. That book allowed me to see myself not just as what I do for money, but as a multi-faceted human being who is allowed to have many creative passions and pursuits. It also helped me get over my crippling fear of failure that stopped me from taking risks, doing or producing anything.
