We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamilah Ferrari and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kamilah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have always been big on supporting the businesses that create the products I use. I’m such a creature of habit, and when I love certain products, I‘m a loyal and faithful customer.
As I became a vegan a few years ago, I gained a heightened interest in cruelty-free companies. Being in my mid-twenties, I also took an interest in learning more about skincare and the ways it can help with preventative and even reparative anti-aging effects. I felt that so many girls around my age were getting injections and going under the knife [younger and younger].
Rather than considering cosmetic fillers, I began learning all about skincare ingredients and discovering natural alternatives for facial injections.
However, I felt that the few skincare companies I supported treated their customers as “just numbers”. Even on ‘social’ media, they rarely responded to their followers.
There was one skincare line in particular that wasn’t exactly a “household name”, but I helped blog about their products and pushed their brand to further popularity. Yet, I was hardly appreciated by their company.
As much as I loved their products and had the potential to grow their skincare line even greater, I thought to myself, “why am I supporting a company that doesn’t truly care for its customers?”
Having already owned my branding and marketing firm (Group Millennial/Kamilah.co) that helps businesses reach their true potential — I was privy to the steps it takes to develop and grow a successful brand.
I thought to myself, “if skincare is such a big part of my life, and if I am going to support a brand, why not support my own?”.
I decided that I would create a skincare brand with revolutionary products working beyond a topical level, but rather a cellular level — all the meanwhile; caring for its customers as “clientele” and providing customized help in finding the proper products. Skincare isn’t ‘one size fits all’ — and therefore, I felt it should be treated as a personalized experience.
I also wanted to create a brand that is extremely eco-aware and takes a different approach to packaging its products. From recyclable, reusable packaging — to NOT individually boxing each product — to even using the first ever USA carbon-neutral delivery service (that’s also a B-Corp!).
Alongside sustainability, inclusivity was also a top priority. Everyone would be included when it came to my own skincare brand!
I decided I would become the change I wished to see in the skincare industry.
That’s exactly what I did with the creation of “basedSKIN.” .
What should our readers know about your business?
What sets us apart from other skincare brands today?
For starters, we have few ingredients in our products. There are only 8–10 ingredients in our serums, and 1-2 ingredients in our moisturizers. We use more actives and less preservatives/fillers — making our products concentrated and effective. A little bit goes a very long way, and therefore our products last.
We are cruelty-free, non-GMO, fragrance and dye free — as well as free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, formaldehyde, mineral oil, and all harmful chemicals and preservatives! Even our Hyaluronic Acid is vegan (NOT derived from rooster combs like most on the market) — and our Squalane Oil is vegan (not made from sharks like the majority on the market)!
Our cleansers are multi-purpose. They effectively remove make-up, dirt, pollution, and excess oils without stripping or drying skin out! Our biotic cleanser, in particular, pH balances the skin, regulates flora, and builds back the skin’s natural barrier. Our cleansers perfectly rid the skin of excess oils without stripping or drying the skin. They’re all fragrance, dye and mineral oil free—as well as hypoallergenic, Ophthalmologist tested, Dermatologist tested, and safe for contact wearers!
All of our cleansers come complimentary with mini product spoons to promote the utmost hygienic product handling, a spa hair wrap to protect your hair-line from getting wet, a fresh washcloth to assist in our cleansing process, and a travel-friendly, transparent cosmetic bag to house it all!
Best of all; we have officially introduced a cruelty-free way to maximize Collagen in our bodies by producing Collagen, Elastin, and Hyaluronic Acid INTERNALLY.
Sure, basedSKIN.’s “Collugreen” (coll-U-green) serums may be applied topically, but the effects surpass much of the skincare on the market by functioning on a CELLULAR-LEVEL.
This is stirring up a new and dramatic change in the beauty industry, as temporary dermal facial fillers have the potential of being replaced by cellular skincare that can actually create PERMANENT EFFECTS.
In fact; COLLUGREEN increases Collagen production by up to 350%!
Collugreen’s revolutionary Matrixyl polypeptides accelerate cellular function — surpassing all other ingredients in the industry!
“Matrixyl 3000” is an anti-aging peptide comprised of two proteins. To diminish the signs of aging, it promotes collagen and elastin in the under-layers of skin. It feeds our stores of glycosaminoglycan and fibroblasts, strengthening the connective tissue to firm aging complexions.
By using Matrixyl, the Collagen your face has lost will actually become REPLACED, and your skin will look and feel fuller and more youthful! It even supports vibrant skin through the cessation of blemishes and the removal of impurities.
However, we take it a step further by also including “Matrixyl™ Synthe® ‘6” — the most advanced version of the Matrixyls!
Matrixyl™ Synthe® ‘6 enhances the production of six skin-rebuilding essentials:
•3 Types Of Collagen:
Collagen I — The main collagen component of skin.
Collagen II — The type of collagen that is first present in the very early stages of tissue repair.
Collagen IV — The collagen responsible for smoothing skin at a cellular level.
•Two Types of Protein:
Fibronectin A — A protein that stimulates repair of tissue.
Lamin5 — A protein that strengthens and smooths the dermis.
•Hyaluronic Acid:
Improves skin hydration, elasticity, and moisture.
Focusing on these 6 essentials ensures that skin can smooth and repair wrinkles at a cellular level, dramatically reducing the signs of aging while rebuilding and strengthening skin.
Other ingredients incorporated into a few separate basedSKIN. serums include Ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q10), Vitamin E, two forms of Vitamin C (Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate and L-Ascorbic Acid), Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B5), Hyaluronic Acid, and Aloe Barbadensis.
Our Non-Comedogenic moisturizers are entirely non-pore clogging and repair damaged skin from the inside out — going deeper to ultimately diminish fine lines and wrinkles. As they so closely match our own skin lipids, they are able to penetrate our cells and actually lubricate the surfaces between them! Better yet, the moisturizers will naturally balance your skin’s oil levels all on their own!
Our moisturizers help in alleviating the following skin conditions:
•Eczema
•Dermatitis
•Psoriasis
•Acne Rosacea
•Varicose Eczema
•Lichen Planus
They even help remove both fresh and long-term scars, prevent stretch marks, and heal open wounds with their antibacterial properties! Our moisturizers have even shown to be as powerful as retinol when it comes to fighting free radicals and reversing damage caused by the sun.
As mentioned, we also take pride in being a SUSTAINABLE BRAND. To keep things conservative, everything is measured out in our skincare; from the serums and moisturizers having measured markings on our child-proof droppers — to our cleansers having mini product spoons for scooping product with an indentation that measures proper product amount needed for each cleanse.
We also do not individually package products in their own product boxes. After-all, it’s really just your brand name housing your products inside of another box. I don’t agree with creating excess, useless waste just to package my products because it “looks nice”.
We are far too advanced to be depending on boxes for instructions and ingredients. Our full ingredient listings with partial instructions are on the recyclable product bottles and jars themselves, and we consult our clients directly so they know how to use our products. You can also read product instructions, full ingredient listings with their detailed functions, and much more on the basedSKIN. online library and blog.
Instead, I decided to place single-item orders wrapped in eco-friendly shipping supplies within a single shipping mailer/box — and our multi-product orders packaged together in a transparent, travel-friendly cosmetic bag within a single shipping mailer/box.
The bags, along with the recyclable bottles, jars, and tins our products are contained in are all reusable and travel-friendly. That way, after you’ve finished our products; you can wash and fill the bottles/jars with other products and place them in the included cosmetic bag to use as toiletries for travel!
The goal is not just recyclable packaging, but USEFUL, REUSABLE packaging to avoid waste!
Marketing wise; I believe in showcasing our products through physical results and photographs of actual clients/people! Why look at websites full of nothing but product packaging when you can also look at the products’ potential results through creative brand campaigns?
Our brand identity is far more than product packaging. Therefore, I like to showcase our products in ways that don’t necessarily mimic the ‘typical’ skincare presentation.
After-all; we’re not your ‘typical’ skin care brand.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Many of my favorite things to do regard spending time outdoors. When my friends visit, I always take them hiking to Los Liones Trailhead in Pacific Palisades. I also love Fryman Canyon in Studio City for weekly hikes. I adore hiking, and I also love going to various beaches up and down the coast. Apart from working out, playing sports, or simply enjoying time outdoors in nature, I also love shopping, going out to brunch/lunch, dinner and even members clubs and lounges. Lately, I‘ve especially enjoyed having my close friends over to hang out at home. I love in-home massages, yoga sessions, paint nights, cooking classes, dinners, movie nights, dance classes, photoshoots, and other fun and creative activities alongside my girlfriends. It doesn’t necessarily matter where I am, but who I’m with! I can have fun doing just about anything as long as I have good people and positive energy around! Regarding places I’d like to check out once things begin to slowly open back up — I’d love to explore some cool exhibits in various museums across Los Angeles/SoCal!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely want to dedicate my shoutout to my parents for encouraging me to believe in my dreams, but also work hard for what I want out of life. The strength my parents instilled in me, the emphasis they put on a good education, along with the room they allowed me to grow and learn for myself; ultimately helped me develop into my most authentic, true self.
