Meet Kamili Lumar | Fashion Designer & Stylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamili Lumar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kamili, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

I created my brand with plus size women like myself in mind . I wanted to give us the ability to find quality one of a kind pieces that were made exclusively for us . As women we experience lack of confidence from time to time . I want to empower us I want us to live bold & unapologetically. Through my designs i aspire to create clothing that makes us feel sexy & look good.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Around the time that I started my brand there were only a handful of plus size stores . Ashley Stewart , Lane Bryant , Mode plus & at the time Forever 21 had just launched their line of plus size clothing . The clothes that these stores offered weren’t targeted towards girls my age . When I started my brand I knew that I wanted to sale fashionable & affordable clothes that curvy girls could feel a sense of pride in wearing .
I started selling resale items but it didn’t make me feel fulfilled . One year on my birthday I had the hardest time finding the perfect outfit . I randomly asked my mom how to use her sewing machine after I had the basics down I declared that I would make my own birthday dress and I did. From there I started making outfits for my immediate family and slowly but surely people starting inquiring about the outfits . But still I was apprehensive about selling my clothes to the public because I felt like they weren’t good enough . With encouragement from my circle of
support , I decided to take that leap of faith and started my brand . What sets me apart from others is my passion for the craft and my resilience. I’m most proud of the fact that I decided to release my designs/ideas to the world . I’m proud that I didn’t let my own personal fears stop me from pursuing what I’ve been so passionate about most of my life .

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hmm with a week long trip sky is the limit with me . The first day in town would definitely be light . It would consist of settling in and going to Sol COCINA for mexican food and margaritas and possibly a dessert run at afters icecream . The biggest thing for me would be getting information on all the major things that my bestie wanted to do in their time in LA. As all of my friends know I’m the friend that will have them out from sunrise to sunrise . And we could end up almost anywhere . It could range from a comedy set at the Hollywood improv to an impromptu trip to Disneyland or a wine safari in Malibu followed by a movie premiere . I’m super spontaneous and eclectic .

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to God first for choosing to bless me with the creative gifts that I possess and using me as a vessel to inspire and uplift everybody that I come in contact with . I would also like to shoutout my family close friends / circle of support . In addition to anyone who has ever supported my brand.
