Meet Kara Bazile-Prophete | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kara Bazile-Prophete and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kara, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
During quarantine, I reconnected with my artistic side. I was home most of the time and had nothing better than to rekindle my love for the arts. I started painting more right around the rise of the BLM Mouvement. I had a lot of anger and frustration inside of me that had to be let out, and it came out as painting and making clay earrings. I had a great flow of commission coming in for the particular theme I had going on around that time. I was painting brown faces with flowers covering their faces. I wanted to relay that despite the hate that people have towards us, we are beautiful and resilient. I also wanted to relay that just like flowers we must allow ourselves to grow in all the places people thought we never would. After that period, came my drive to make polymer clay earrings. I wanted to give all women a pair of earrings that made them feel empowered and confident.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am most proud of how far I’ve come so far. I moved to the states in 2010 after the earthquake hit my home country – Haiti. I was fortunate to leave to get an education here in the states, however; I had to leave my family behind. I had to adjust to a whole new culture, new rules, and ideologies. I had to play catch up with a lot of things – and quite frankly, I still am – but 11 years later I made it through high school, college, graduate school, and have my own business. It was tough but I had to make the best out of it because I had nothing else to hold onto. I have no choice but to succeed in everything I do. I am still learning that I am not perfect and it’s okay to ask for help when we feel burnt out. We weren’t put on this earth to be alone so we don’t need to carry it all.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would have them try street tacos for sure! I’ve had tacos before but nothing tastes better than authentic Mexican tacos. I would also have them try sushi from @yanagisushi. We’ve tried sushi around the Woodland Hills area but this spot in Northridge is on the top of the list for sure. I would also go to an overlook, just to admire the valley at night. We are still getting to know LA so the other spots we would visit would be super cliché.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to my husband Daniel and sister-in-law Dahyna, who are constantly pushing me to be better about pursuing my creative dreams – no matter the direction.
