We had the good fortune of connecting with Mohit Sengupta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mohit, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Most people assume that there are only a few ways to survive and succeed in the music industry, but as I’ve networked and had more chances to reveal my skillset to the people in my industry, more and more doors open. An example of this is that although I consider myself an Artist and Audio Engineer first, my skillset of being a professional guitarist gets me a ton of opportunities to build up financials and network with the right people in my industry. What’s interesting about this is that I had been developing these skills for years before even realizing that it could be of use to others as a service whether it be playing guitar for other artist’s music, playing with them live, helping them make content/alternative versions of songs, making loop packs and selling them to producers and so much more! So with that being said, don’t be quiet/undermine the less known skills you may have because there’s a high chance others also can make use of them and you can find growth this way as well.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a bilingual genre-fluid artist based out of Chicago and New Delhi. My style of songwriting comes from playing multiple instruments and incorporating them into my stripped-down hip-hop-influenced production style. I take a lot of inspiration from the everchanging sound of the artists in my generation and hope to pave a way for music that is not bound by a title. I am someone who is very passionate about the industry in many ways which makes me dabble in everything, whether it be engineering, songwriting, music business, etc. Some key things that have always helped me succeed are, passion (to truly find something you love in what you do), self-love/trust (allowing yourself to be great and recognizing it), and finally discipline (actually doing the work you said you’d do, let the work speak for itself).
My brand/my story is really just me so what I tell people is just focus on being the best version of yourself you can be and surround yourself with the right people who will help you achieve that.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Although I currently am based out of Chicago, whenever I’m in LA, I love going to this popular Indian Fusion spot called Badmaash Fairfax, I love how they take the food from our Desi Culture and blend them with Western styles while still keeping it authentic. Another fun activity I love doing while in the city is going to the Melrose Trading Post on Fairfax, I personally think it’s a great way to spend your Sunday shopping for unique products from a variety of local Vendors and Artists! If you’re into fashion, this is most definitely a hidden gem!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely my family and my friends for always enabling my passion and encouraging me to pursue what I wanted to do. I’ve always surrounded myself with people that inspire me and a lot of my drive comes from the type of people I keep close. I definitely want to shout out all my artist friends, especially the ones not pursuing music full-time but still finding the time to be a big part of my music.
