We had the good fortune of connecting with Karissa Nabbie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karissa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk-taking is a crucial and necessary part of life. If you aren’t taking risks, you aren’t really living life.Taking risks has played a very vital and important role in my life. The first big risk I took for my life and career was moving from New Jersey to Los Angeles at 18 years oldto follow my dream by pursuing an acting career. I took the risk to take student loans out to get my BFA in Acting. The risk was worth the reward of having the proper training and necessary education to be highly skilled in my craft. Presently I’m taking risks by starting my own businesses. Also starting the business is just the beginning. You have to continually take risks in your business. “With Great Risks comes Great Rewards”.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an actress, model, makeup artist, and entrepreneur so my art is a variety of things. I take makeup clients for all different events, projects, and shoots such as headshots, music video shoots, bridal makeup, and more. Last year I started my beauty brand Lash Tings. Lash Tings is a luxury beauty line specializing in strip lashes and adhesives. You can shop Lash Tings online at www.lashtingsllc.com. My artistry sets me apart because my art is multi-faceted. I’m versatile and have multiple talents and creative skills. I act, model, and do makeup, I’m most proud about debuting in my first movie Neurotic Beauty. Neurotic Beauty was the first project I auditioned for out of college and I booked the lead role. I’m most excited about modeling for Benefit Cosmetics last year. I love their makeup and was literally living the dream. I got to where I am today through focus, dedication, and determination. No, it was not easy and it’s still not easy. I overcame the challenges by remembering my “why” and purpose. Remembering why I started and remembering where I’m trying to go. I also relied heavily on God, my support system of loved ones, and self-care routines to replenish myself spiritually, mentally, physically, and emotionally. The lessons I have learned along the way are “Nobody cares, work harder”. It’s your dream, your brand, your business, etc. No one was ever supposed to care and no one owes you anything, but you owe it to yourself! Work so hard that they have no choice but to care! Also, you have to really commit and dedicate yourself to your dream, plan, or goal. Stay focused and don’t let inconveniences, people, or even failure deter you. Most importantly, you NEED discipline. You can have all the motivation in the world, but if you aren’t disciplined you won’t make any moves! MAKE MOVES, NOT EXCUSES. Lastly, you have to put in the hard work every day. Put in the blood, sweat, and tears consistently and I promise you will see results. I want the world to know that God put this dream in my heart for a reason. I’m here to empower others to be their authentic selves and follow the dreams in their hearts too.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would them to the Grove, Melrose & Fairfax, and Rodeo Drive to hang out and shop. For food, we’d have to go to BeniHibachi, Bossa Nova, and WiJammin. I would take them to Nobu for the great sushi and gorgeous scenery. I’d also take them to eat at Beauty & Essex, Tao, Wolfgang Puck in Bel-Air, Ocean Prime, Delilah, or Ysabel. For the best pizza, we could stop at Berri’s for lobster pizza, Burratino’s Brick Oven pizza for pepperoni pizza, or Joe’s pizza in Hollywood for a quick slice. For brunch, we could go to The Highlight Room or The Waffle. If my friend was down to hike I would of course take them to Runyon Canyon in Hollywood or Wisdom Tree in Burbank for stunning views of the city. For beaches, we would have to go to Venice, Santa Monica, and Malibu (specifically Paradise Cove, the restaurant too, and Zuma beach). If they wanted to explore some of my favorite Orange County beaches, I’d take them to Newport Beach, Seal Beach, and Laguna Beach. In true tourist fashion, I would obviously take them to see the Hollywood sign and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. If they wanted to go to an amusement park we could hit Universal Studios. There’s really so much to do, see, and explore. The possibilities are endless.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my mother and father, and my boyfriend Noble and his mother. Without these people, I do not know where I would be. They really show me unconditional love and support, and take care of me in all ways, shapes, and forms. I am so eternally grateful for them. I owe all my future success to them. It is their continuous love, effort, patience, and time with me that keeps me grounded, strong, and keeps me going. I also want to shout out my best friends, Tony and Dion. They’ve remained consistent in my life for 10+ years now. These two are more like brothers to me at this point. Blood couldn’t make us any closer. They have been true to me since the beginning and never switched up. They’re 100% themselves around me and love me for the real me. I appreciate that they challenge me as a person and as a creative. They are always supporting me, checking me, keeping me in line, and reminding me who I am and what I’m destined for.
