We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Granchelli and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kate, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
I believe the single most important thing that outsiders are unaware of when it comes to the business of matching caregivers with high profile families, is that although it looks “easy” and “glamours”, the amount of time and work it takes to do what we do at Modern Minders is unimaginable. I am in the business of building relationships and relationships (any relationship) takes time. For every family we work with, it came from a relationship that was cultivated over time. I think that sometimes candidates see a well oiled machine of a company from the outside, (we make it look really easy), when in reality it is a lot of 12-15 hour days sometimes 6/7 days a week of screening candidates and communicating with families to make sure they are heard and their needs are met.

What should our readers know about your business?
I opened Modern Minders because I really wanted to provide a service to families that gave both families and more importantly Nannies/ domestic workers a voice. I feel we aren’t just your everyday nanny agency. We have been told and I like to believe this is true, we offer a more personalized approach to finding exceptional childcare. We are committed to building relationships, creating and cultivating life long partnerships with the families we work with. Modern Minders almost entirely works with families that are only referred via word of mouth and only a select number of families at one time to ensure quality long term placements. That’s the number one reason we are often chosen over larger agencies nationally. Our large network and our reputation provides us with the ability to personalize any family search; only sending a handful of top notch candidates in comparison to our competition. We started out with a very small goal and through hard work and dedication we have been able to grow the brand without loosing the original mission of providing top notch personal attention to each and every family we work with. Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy. When I started the company I worked two jobs and any extra hours in the day I spent building the company. Hard work and dedication to my vision really got me where I am. I am most proud of the fact that I never gave up on my dream of owning my own company that would give me the freedom and confidence to do anything I set my mind to. Of course there have been growing pains, like with anything in life. You learn very quickly who your friends are and who is there to support you. The biggest lesson I have learned is not everyone will agree with your choices, and not everyone will be happy for you in your successes. I believe it is really important to surround yourself with people with a moral compass who have the same integrity as you do. People remember how you make them feel and going that extra mile is always so important. I believe this really sets us apart as a brand and most importantly as a service.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a bit of a foodie, so some of the most fun, interesting, things to check out in LA for me usually revolves around food. I would start my day at Blue Jam Cafe, and then head to lunch at the polo lounge at The Beverly Hills Hotel for a McCarthy Salad and lounge around the pool. Dinner would be John and Vinnie’s for sure. Honestly the most fun places for me in any city is where there is a good wine bar, great company and good music. Since I am bi-coastal I really love to catch a Dodgers game when I am in town and of course no game is complete without a Dodger dog and a good brew.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to all the incredible domestic workers and advocates of domestic workers rights. You are the real heroes and without you agencies like Modern Minders wouldn’t exist.
