We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Namowicz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kate, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always wanted to be an artist since I was a little girl. When I was having a hard time figuring out what kind of artist I wanted to be, a family member pointed out that I loved animated films I should be an animator. That sparked my interest to go into the animation industry. I went to Ringling College of Art and Design tp pursue an education in animation and made a short film called “Mime Your Manners” with my co director Skyler Porras. The film has one many awards including the Silver Medal for Best Domesticated Film from the Student Academy Awards.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So I am an animator. Like I said I’ve always wanted to be some sort of artist and decided to pursue animation. I went to Ringling College of Art and Design and for our senior thesis we had to make a 3D animated short film. I teamed up with my co director and awesome friend Skyler Porras to make a short. Our film is called “Mime Your Manners” is about an arrogant man who is cursed with mimism and learns a lesson on how to be a good person. You can watch the film on YouTube. Something I’m very proud of is that our film won the Silver Medal for Best Domesticated Film from the Student Academy Awards. Famous animator Glen Keane was there to present our award and he said our film reminded him of his time as the animation supervisor for the Beast on the Disney classic “Beauty and The Beast.” I’ve also had the blessing to work on Sony Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 4 which was so much fun and a bucket list film. My goal is someday to be a a feature film animation supervisor like my mentors Amy Smeed and Alan Hawkins

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Vancouver, Canada. I have lots of yummy restaurants like Jam Café, Saku, and Tom’s Sushi. I take you to Granville Island, a Vancouver favorite where there is a large marketplace with lots of fresh delicious food and cute shops. We go to Chinatown to go get some Chinese cuisine. I’m in a local Roller Skate club so we would go to an open skate at the Roller gym. I’m a big thirfter so we would go to my favorite spots to go shopping for vintage or thrifted clothing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank my mom and dad Scott and Rebecca Namowicz, My brother Tyler, sister Kylie and the rest of my family. I want to thank my mentor Walt Disney Animation supervising animator Amy Smeed. My co director Skyler Porras, my friends from Ringling including the class of 2020, and my adopted grandparents Paul and Laura Zatz. My professors who helped on my film including Heather Thomson, Paul Downs, Billy Merritt, and George Cwirko-Godycki. Also mentors Aviv Mano and Alan Hawkins who helped me get a head start on my career.
