We had the good fortune of connecting with Katelynne Donoghue and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katelynne, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
“Your business and results will grow in direct proportion to your own growth.” -James Arthur Ray
When I decided to leave the 9-5 model and become self employed, I had no idea my business would require so much of my own personal growth. Why would it? I had been working since I was a teenager and never needed to fix anything about who I was in order to receive a paycheck every week, so why would I even think about needing to do so, now that I work for myself?
Well, I learned quickly that it very much is required. When you own a business, you are the business, the business is you, no matter what industry you are in.
Your business is basically you looking at yourself in the mirror. When I first became self employed, I was not pleased with who I saw staring back at me. So I worked on myself. And it sure has paid off, in more ways than one.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I recently switched brokerages and am now working with Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty in La Jolla. It is a blessing to be a part of such an outstanding company and I am so glad to be here. The Sotheby’s brand is exactly what I want for my business and clients. I don’t just help people buy and sell real estate, I help them elevate their lifestyle.
There are 3 ingredients that got me to where I am today: people skills, communication skills, and self-accountability.
I don’t think it was specifically easy or hard to get here, it was simply required so I did what needed to be done. Sure, the road wasn’t always sunshine and roses, but when it was dark, I knew the sun would rise again.
I truly enjoy real estate. I am not here because I love the income; I love helping people. Making the home buying and selling process as smooth as possible brings me joy. So, when you work with me, I am all in. Buying or selling your house is just the beginning, asset and wealth management is the real treat. I have an extensive team of experts in all areas of wealth and finances, and you are our priority.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Mission beach is hands down first on my list. It is my favorite beach in San Diego for many reasons: most accessible parking than other beaches, the boardwalk is full of happy people and local vendors, and every acai bowl I have had there is delicious. Ocean Beach is next on my list because I love the vibe. It has remained almost exclusively all small businesses and I support local as often as I can.
Balboa Park is a must as well. The museums are incredible and the organ pavilion is a real treat if you attend a concert.
And of course, I have to mention La Jolla. It is the location of our office so I spend a great amount of time there. La Jolla is pretty well known, yet it is still easy to miss great spots because it has so much to offer. The tide pools at Windansea are breathtaking and a must see. And, one of my favorite restaurants is steps from the beach, El Avocado.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to my boyfriend. It sounds cliche to include my significant other in my recognition speech, but when you have a solid support system at home with you, you understand why so many people mention it.
He has been there for me through all phases of my career journey so far. He was there when I was a nurse and often came home crying. He was there when I started my first business, and there when it folded. He was there for all the businesses I started and folded and all of the whirlwind that comes with my personal growth around that. And now that I am running a successful business, he is my loudest cheerleader.
