We had the good fortune of connecting with Cait Khosla and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cait, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Botany Box was created for two kinds of people: those who were already plant lovers, and curious plant goers. We wanted everyone to easily order online & care for their own collection of plants seamlessly and effectively. When I moved to NYC back in 2017, the idea for Botany Box really took off. I realized I couldn’t build my own green jungle in my little apartment without it costing me an arm and a leg. Seriously, it was so frustrating going plant shopping and coming home with a $13 succulent, so I decided to get serious about creating a solution to a problem.

My mom actually named the company, which was sentimental because she grew my love for plants at a really young age. And as a female founder, and a bi-racial person of color, I wanted to embody and showcase that as much as possible, in hopes other young women would feel inspired to take that leap. There is still SO much work to be done, and many exciting plans we have for this year!

What should our readers know about your business?
One of the things I’m proud of is building a bit of a social presence on Botany Box (@botanybox). I really, really enjoy creating a community there and flex my creative muscle outside of my day job. In turn, I think it built up my confidence to launch products for Botany Box that people would actually be interested in.

Business-wise, we’ve definitely come a long way! While we’re self-funded, we tend to have budget constraints as far as what we’d like to do and ways we want to expand in the company. There are always challenging times, as well as balancing the business and full-time jobs!

A lesson I learned along the way is everything does NOT have to execute perfectly. You don’t have to have it done right the first time. I wish I told myself sooner that everything didn’t need to be done right now, in the moment, or else it wasn’t going to be a success. Another big thing is that you have to stop everything else you’re doing to start a business. While it’s no walk in the park having a full-time job and running Botany Box, I think it’s a common misconception that you can’t do both and you have to commit to one.

If I could tell the world one thing about our brand, it’s yes, you CAN care for these succulents – so give it a try 😉

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh LOVE this: 1. Fia in Santa Monica for dinner
2. Elephante in Santa Monica for brunch or late lunch
3. Calabra (SM Proper Hotel) for a drink
4. Great White in Venice for afternoon appetizers and cocktails
5. Esters Wine Bar in Santa Monica for happy hour
6. Getty Museum for a relaxing Sunday

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I 100% credit everything to my mother, the strongest woman I know.
