We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathleen O’Heron and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kathleen, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Success to me is having the drive and eagerness to keep pursuing new things while simultaneously nurturing your current community. Never losing sight of the people who were with you from the start of your journey and being open to adding new people to your inner circle.
Success for my brand equates to viewers resonating with the experiences I share online and seeking to recreate them for their own stories and memories. I’m thrilled when a viewer feels comfortable enough to ask me for a recommendation, “Where’s the best date spot in Culver City?”, “Your favorite bar in Porto to meet people?”, “What should I wear to a rave in Berlin?” Receiving messages about others using my content as a resource or inspiration on where to go brings me a sense of purpose and joy that encourages me to make even more content.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
A lot of people assume I do this full time but I’ve always worked a corporate 9 to 5 while pursuing my creative endeavors during my 5 to 9. It hasn’t always been easy but a few things I’ve learned along the way is figuring out the type of job that works best to accommodate my needs as a content creator. For exp. picking a career as a Graphic Designer allows me more opportunities to work remotely and have a little more flexibility in my day-to-day schedule. Applying for positions on social media teams allows me to learn new design trends and gain insight into what type of content is doing well so I can apply that to my own feed. The after work part of my day is usually filled with replying to emails, attending events and taking a fun +1 with me to help create content. Being able to share my success with others and take them along for the ride is one of the most rewarding parts of my pursuit. I love having a busy schedule and it’s a balance that brings me a sense of peace knowing that I have room for both work and play. My online presence offers me a creative outlet that allows me to share positive experiences with others, by acting as a visual scrapbook to scroll through and reference for their own use.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m pretty sure I talk about these places all the time (so you know they’re genuine recommendations!),
but here’s a few crowd favorites that bring notable joy to anyone who visits.
Things to Do:
Cinespia: The perfect spot for a picnic and catching a movie in the Summer at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Really great to do with a group of friends and get dressed up according to the movie theme!
Frogtown Flea Crawl: Fun and free community event that spreads across the Los Angeles River Bike Path and connects local businesses together. It’s a great way to get your steps in, shop and discover something new along the way. Check out Happier Cafe (one of the stops en route) for some seriously refreshing drinks!
Shatto 39 Lanes: Fun spot in K-Town to grab some drinks, play arcade games and go bowling with a group of friends or with a date.
JetSki2Catalina: One of the coolest experiences I’ve had, this is an entire day trip where you learn how to jet ski, ride next to dolphins, swim through a cave and spend a few hours on Catalina Island for lunch before going back home.
Food:
Destroyer: My favorite restaurant in LA featuring a rotating seasonal menu, unique flavors and beautifully plated dishes that remind me of the fine dining I’ve done in Copenhagen. This place is a must visit in my opinion and their Koshikari Rice Porridge has my heart.
Abbots Pizza: The only thing I order here is a single slice of the BBQ Chicken Pizza and it’s the BEST (of that flavor combination specifically) I’ve ever had! I took my friend last night and she confirmed that the BBQ pizza was the best first bite she’s had of anything in a long time. I dream about it often after a night out.
Formosa Cafe: One of the oldest bars in the city and an iconic Hollywood landmark. I love the over the top decor, sipping my Mai Tai from a dine-in train car and ordering hot plates off the Taiwanese bar menu.
The list could go on! But if you every need an idea of what to do or where to go, you can always find me somewhere, reviewing something on my page @SomewhereWithKat
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friends and family, especially my parents, are the ones who have always encouraged my creative endeavors and crafted my storytelling abilities. Being surrounded by people who are kind, hard working and who value shared experiences are the inspiration for the way I show up online and in real life. Lastly, a big shoutout to those who follow along and are interested enough to see what I’m doing, watch where I’m going and are inspired to do something new because of my content. Hearing your stories motivates me to create everyday!
