We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Shorey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Financial freedom, and the freedom to choose my work schedule.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a professional recording artist, songwriter, musician, producer, and award-winning Stevie Nicks tribute artist. I’m thrilled to have finally made music-making and performing my full-time job, however it has been greatly limited during the pandemic! I’ve been using the down time to write, record, and produce my debut Rock/Americana solo album. I’m so proud of the work, and anxious to share it. It’s been exceptionally challenging during the pandemic, with very limited funds. However, I have used that fear and stress to fuel my creativity and determination to prevail. After working “regular” jobs and doing music part-time for years, I was determined to make my living as a live singer/performer in 2019. Touring several times/week all over CA, getting most of the gigs on my own. Once I play for a venue, they always have me back. I’ve built consistently stready gigs and a growing fan base, by developing connections with business owners and bookers, and practicing my craft every day. My shows are full of joy and dancing crowds. I perform solo, typically for 3 hours per show. Therefore I have the ability to perform so many amazing songs that people love, along with my originals. I focus mainly on classic hits from not only Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, but other inspiring artists such as Dolly Parton, Pat Benatar, Linda Ronstadt, Blondie, Carole King etc. I also perform with the amazing Fleetwood Mac tribute band, Twisted Gypsy. I got to where I am because I never gave up, even when I was told over and over again how hard it is to “make it” in the music business. I can verify that it’s true, haha! I’ve been signed to Interscope Records and recorded with legends, including Quincy Jones, Will Smith, and Robin Thicke. I work every day on my craft, as a singer and songwriter. Having learned from the best in the business, I set an extremely high bar for myself. My voice and strength as a performer has given me the opportunity to make money doing what I love, and I’m proud of myself for never giving up. I encourage those with a dream to see it through, no matter the obstacles and challenges. The most important step to having success is to be authentic to who you are, to recognize your strengths, and to capitalize on them!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would head straight for the beach! I love CA for it’s beauty, weather, and nature. I’m not a fan of high-rises and busy Hollywood streets. We would visit the Santa Monica Pier, and head up the coast to local vineyards, quaint shops, and oceanside cafes.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve had to overcome the obstacles of being told I couldn’t make it, by those close to me who believe in my talent, but not the music business. It has caused me to want to give up, but I have used the inspiration from the songwriters who have been successful with their incredible gift. I can thank Stevie Nicks for writing the most amazing music, that I have the privilege of performing for my job!
