We had the good fortune of connecting with Katrina Ubell, MD and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katrina, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
At Weight Loss for Busy Physicians, we help and support women physicians who struggle with overeating and their weight through life coaching. Over the last six years, we’ve helped over one thousand women physicians lose weight permanently while also helping them improve their relationships, resolve their work-related burnout, and negotiate for better contracts and raises. By helping them feel more fulfilled in their lives, they often fall back in love with their work and why they chose to go into medicine in the first place. This ultimately positively impacts all of us when we engage with the medical system for our healthcare. Happier doctors provide better care and patients are more satisfied with their experiences. In addition, many doctors have learned how to better help their patients to resolve their own overeating and weight struggles, where before, they didn’t feel that their recommendations were actually helping all that often. I’ve now written a book titled How to Lose Weight for the Last Time; Brain-Based Solutions for Permanent Weight Loss which sums up what I teach in a way that will help so many physicians and non-physicians a like. So by helping women physicians to find peace and freedom around food, all of us benefit.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My coaching business is almost exclusively online (we offer a couple in-person live events per year but otherwise, we are online!). What sets us apart from others is that we know exactly who we serve (women physicians in clinical practice who want to lose weight permanently) and we stay focused on helping them, even when other (sometimes lucrative!) opportunities arise. While the company has grown a lot in six years, we mostly stay focused on the impact that we want to make, rather than revenue goals. In my mind, if we are having the impact we want to see, then the revenue is right behind! It’s definitely not been easy to grow the business, particularly because I had zero business experience when I started. But I love to learn and sometimes it’s good when you don’t know what “the rules” are – then you don’t even know that you’re breaking them! Over the years, I’ve learned that it’s very easy for me to overwork, especially as a way of trying to manage my emotions, such as anxiety. The more boundaried I am with my time, the more I enjoy my work. Ultimately, I’ve found that when you keep going, even through failures, most of the time, you’ll end up figuring it out. For me, the challenge of solving problems and serving our clients better is more motivating than the bottom line.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love the beach and visiting the theme parks too.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My women physician clients have been such an inspiration and I’ve learned so much from them. They are truly amazing human beings. And Brooke Castillo at The Life Coach School was my first coach and instrumental in helping me get started with coaching.
