We had the good fortune of connecting with Kay (khloud) Shehata and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kay (Khloud), how do you think about risk?
Risk-taking is a fascinating part of life. It’s all about finding that balance between comfort and growth. Sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to amazing experiences, while other times it might not go as planned, but you still learn something valuable.

In my own journey, taking risks has often meant embracing uncertainty—whether it was trying something new, meeting new people, or exploring uncharted territories. Each experience adds a layer to who you are.

Changes in life are always happening, so you might as well take the risk. Where there’s risk, there’s also opportunity and the possibility for a better outcome.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey to where I am today has been filled with challenges, from navigating tight deadlines to overcoming creative blocks. Yet, I’ve learned to see these obstacles as opportunities for growth. Having a supportive network of fellow designers and mentors has been invaluable; their guidance, feedback, and encouragement have helped me through tough times.

As a multidisciplinary designer, exploring various fields—such as package design, branding, video editing, and photography—has opened countless doors. Each area enriches my understanding of design, enabling me to create cohesive and impactful projects that resonate with clients and audiences alike.

Being a 3D artist has empowered me to produce affordable and accessible designs. With the ability to model and render concepts, I can bring ideas to life without the high costs typically associated with traditional methods. This flexibility allows for experimentation and innovation, enabling me to deliver quality work that meets client needs while staying within budget. By leveraging 3D tools, I can visualize and iterate efficiently, ensuring that both functionality and aesthetics shine without compromising affordability. This approach not only enhances my creative process but also makes design more attainable for a wider audience.

Ultimately, my journey has taught me the importance of putting myself out there, embracing challenges, and continually learning from each experience. Today, I proudly run my own freelance studio, where I can fully express my creative vision and collaborate with inspiring individuals. This path has not only sharpened my skills but also deepened my passion for design and storytelling.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting San Francisco for a week, I’d kick things off with breakfast at Blue Barn Gourmet, then stroll along Fisherman’s Wharf and grab lunch at Café Gratitude. On Day 2, we’d bike across the Golden Gate Bridge after exploring Golden Gate Park, stopping for lunch at The Plant Café and dinner at Nourish Café. A day trip to Muir Woods would be a highlight, complete with a picnic and some time in Sausalito. We’d dive into local culture with visits to the Mission District and SFMOMA, enjoying meals at Seed + Salt and Urban Putt. To wrap up our trip, we’d relax at Burke Williams after shopping in Union Square, enjoying brunch at Plow and a final dinner at Boulevard. It would be the perfect blend of art, nature, and delicious, healthy food!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I really love the spirit of the Shoutout series! I want to give a huge shoutout to my mentors and supportive friends who have been essential in my journey. Their guidance, encouragement, and honest feedback have shaped my growth in so many ways.

I also want to highlight some podcasts that have inspired me, especially those that challenge my thinking and push me to explore new ideas. They’ve opened my mind to fresh perspectives and kept my motivation alive. A few favorites are Jay Shetty’s On Purpose, Steven Bartlett’s The Diary of a CEO, and Mel Robbins’ podcast. Each one has truly made a difference for me!
