We had the good fortune of connecting with KayLa N. Allen, MPH and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi KayLa N., can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Often, people will create a business based on how much money they can make or how they can become famous. I have found that the most important lesson to learn when it comes to my career is that the only way that I can succeed is by being myself (and then some). See, we all have an opportunity to achieve our goals, but we may slip if we do not incorporate that which makes us unique into our efforts and daily practices.
Stepping into the next level of your possibilities and the next phase of your identity means that you have to continue to evolve yourself and be proud to remain true to all that you are. Keep learning, loving yourself, and growing! Over and over again, we have to choose ourselves and seek wise counsel that can strategically help us become the next version of ourselves.
No matter what we face in life, a business can become the place where we have our cake and eat it, too, if that is what we genuinely want it to be. If we tap into all we are, a business and career will be a space for thriving, impact, and joy.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is Dr. KayLa N. Allen. I am a national, professional speaker, coach, health and wellness leader, healthcare administrator, letter writer, blogger, vlogger, educator, and thoughT-provoker. I am the sole owner, founder, and CEO of my life-changing business. Dr. KayLa N. Allen, the business, is multifaceted but centered on one goal, personal transformation.
The evolution of and transformation toward effective leadership and prosperous living includes a strategic set of valuable plans that can be executed with wise counsel, consistency, evidence- and research-based practices, impactful empowerment, and the will continue to progress over time.
My practice/services work with many leaders and ambitious individuals, including executives, healthcare administrators, multicultural women of every age, post-secondary scholars, women starting over in life, and thriving former domestic violence survivors.
A combination of personal and leadership development/transformation is what my practice generates through my expertise in shaping thriving futures.
I’m most proud of my ability to shine a light on what I have overcome in my business. I utilize evidence- and research-based practice, personal experiences, and natural wisdom to serve my clients and impact audiences.
I arrived at the current place I am in within my business through my education (within less than one year, I will be Dr. KayLa), lived experiences, volunteering, lessons from loved ones and life, and personal transformation. Not one part of my journey has been easy. In fact, for many, it may seem like my life at many points was unbearable. However, I found a way to overcome my challenges by pushing the boundaries of positivity and using it in every aspect of my life.
I have a very different view of positivity and personal transformation. I believe that having some element of hope and maintaining some internal joy is great, but so are the difficult points in life that push us to and beyond our limits. Positivity and personal transformation happen when we are diligent and wise enough to keep moving forward. My version of positivity is the core of Dr. KayLa N. Allen (the business and brand), Dear Mixed Girl (letters and coaching program), Becoming Dr. KayLa (vlogs), all of my coach offerings, and every written and spoken message that I present to the world.
Internal to my business, everything that I do has elements of personal experience and scientific (evidence- and research-based) findings. My story is one of overcoming, possibilities, courage, “uniqueness”, love, and compassion; this is what sets me and my business apart from others.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a major foodie no matter what city I am in at a given time. I would recommend that we explore restaurants morning-evening (surely, with dessert at every turn). Museums, places that provide an artsy vibe, and spots off of the beaten path are the vibe to follow. So, while we may have to journey to Griffith Observatory, California African American Museum, Roscoe’s Chicken and waffles, Fonuts, or Little Pine, I would love to just explore the city and surrounding areas and have fun doing exactly what we love to do: eat and embrace laughter. Exciting people and a good time are everywhere in Los Angeles…all you have to do is explore and have fun!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to those who truly love, encourage, support, value, and appreciate me. My circle is small and mighty; the love and support within it far surpass any bounds or limitations. This special group of people pick me up when I am down, encourage me, value my position in their lives, and believe in me. My circle is there for me at every turn of my life, and I could never replace them. I am ever grateful for my friends and loved ones who push me to be the next version of myself. These people know who they are (beyond those listed), and I pray that in all that I do and achieve, they feel my love and understand how much of a difference they have made in my life and those I serve through my business. Mom, Lovee, Ivan, Bryan, Amy, Brian, Laura, Celeste, Lindsey, Uncle Jose, countless acquaintances, and very loved ones, thank you for all that you are, all that you do, and how you always love me for me, through and through.
