We had the good fortune of connecting with Heena Seth, aka the Fashion doctor, and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heena, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
There is something that Dr. James Hollis says in “Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life” which has been very meaningful to me:
“We may choose careers, but we do not choose vocation. Vocation chooses us. To choose what chooses us is a freedom the by-product of which will be a sense of rightness and a harmony within, even if lived out in the world of conflict, absent validation, and at considerable personal cost.”
Choosing to live life the way I want to has been a decision I made over time by realizing that I could not ultimately live it any other way. Everything I have done since then, joining a fashion design course, becoming an instagram blogger, and now starting my own youtube channel, has been a result of that realization and life does in fact feel more aligned and in harmony with who I am.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart is probably my story. I did not start off my career in fashion. In fact I started off by going to (and completing) medical school. During a burn out phase, I decided I would give my hobbies a shot and lo and behold, a fashion internship turned up. One of the things they asked me to do was model and since then it’s been fun delving into that whenever I can – because of this I have an instagram blog where I post modeling pics along with a fashion fact on Fridays. I realized how much of life I had missed on while focusing on studying so I took up a profession in health information management that allowed me to explore my other options. I am now a Clinical Documentation Specialist and I also have time to attend fashion design classes and maintain my new youtube channel.
Was it easy? Haha not at all. The hardest part was finally being able to hear my own voice and then act on it. I had my intentions set on being a doctor for so long, I had to ask myself if this was even my dream. And even after I acted on this, my life didn’t snap into place like how it is now. It took time and multiple wrong turns just to get to where I know I am going somewhere.
I think the best lesson I learned was how much joy comes with being able to live life on your own terms. Once you get a taste of this, there is no going back. You start making decisions based on this ideology and finally life starts reflecting back what you give it.
What I want the world to know about me, my story and youtube channel is that it is accessible. I am here as a creator and I am ready to make more content whether it is a modeling post or a youtube video on traveling. I really hope it inspires people to do the same for themselves. And to the least, they can enjoy as I explore the world of fashion or take a trip to a national park.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ah a week is not long enough for LA. But let’s try. Obviously we have to do some theme parks – Disneyland and Universal studios is a must for all newcomers to LA. You have not been to LA without going to the beach, I’d take them to Santa Monica Pier and then hit the beach. Also have y’all been to the salsa/bachata scene in LA? It’s lit, excuse my millennial verbiage. There’s a dance studio called 3rd street dance by the Beverly Center and they have the best atmosphere for dance classes and socials. We would have to make sure we ate at Vegan Glory nearby because Thai food is a must. And lastly did I mention going to the beach? Haha, we would have to go to Malibu, specifically the hike in Topanga State park for the view of LA.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My awesome friend Kai, without whom this article would not have been possible, and Sara my friend and photographer (@saratakespics) who has taken the pictures for this article and makes me look good even on my bad days.
