We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Oats Eden and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, what’s the most important think you’ve done for your children?
I am the mother of 2 beautiful intelligent kids, ages 2 and 1 I have a daughter & son. I believe the most import thing I have done as a parent is teach them that no matter how far the stars are always reach for them. I have been teaching them both about education, what justice look like, and how to always remember communities interest before self. I decided to further my education because my daughter and I was talking while I cooked dinner and she said, “Mommy, let’s both go to school” so I took some time to think on her outburst and decided to go and become a chef. Which she knew mommy has been an awesome cook but I wanted to prove to her being a black girl “Chef” in this world is a beautiful thing as well and always fix your crown never let it tilt. The hardest part in my whole entire life was to explain to my Black Male Son that he we always be treated different not because of something he may have done or said but because of the color of his skin.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Chef, I’ve learned along my journey that you should never tell yourself what you can not do! I’m in the position I am today because my daughter and parents encouraged me to do something I love and that’s cooking. I own a restaurant called (A Touch Of Faith) which was named after my daughter Ava Faith when I was pregnant with her I went through bad depression. And my first time holding her and seeing her touched my heart in ways that I never thought of, I didn’t know where the funds would come from to open my store front but I started out in my home selling hot lunch plates and homemade cakes. And I’m closer to owning my store front each and everyday.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m from a small town called “Eupora MS” I’m 10 min away from “Starkville MS” which is home of MS State University I’ve done a lot of taste testing and my top 4 places would be my very own place (A touch of Faith) (Georgia Blue) wonderful food-drinks and atmosphere, Roses baby’s (Cajun ) food wonderful people make you feel at home Little Dooeys (BBQ) their restaurant is in the owner’s old home where he grew up he call everybody family Big Smoke (BBQ) place started out as a mom and pop only doing fundraisers and became every one top favorite. The most fun places to go would be Jackson if they are into learning history or Cowbells if they are into dancing etc.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
