We had the good fortune of connecting with Kellie Sōl and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kellie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I would love to say this is who I am and it was destined but I do think that upbringing facilitated space for me to be confident in going after what I felt was placed inside of me. I come from a family of creatives. My parents both work in the entertainment industry as well. So they get what I’m after. It never sound unrealistic to say “ I want to travel the world and make music, act , create shows, write books, etc “ because I grew up with people who have done it themselves or personally witnessed it happen.
I appreciate that because so many creatives don’t have that experience.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My name is Kellie Sōl.
I am a musician, filmmaker, writer, and the founder of @thesolloulaproject
I wish I could give an answer of what sets me apart from others besides, simply just being me.
My brain really doesn’t let me process any form of comparison, even if I try. I am me and there is only one.
Currently I’m at a point within my career where I’m now understanding who I am as an artist. Part of that is respecting the process letting this shit flow organically. I refuse to forcefully go through this. Creativity is such a huge part of me I feel I cant rush the growth of it , it grows as I do
Within my career one of the goals is to be able to look back on the journey, one day and see what each phase of my life brung to me creatively. Whether that be music, film, books, events, businesses, and everything I haven’t thought of yet . I feel like that’s what it’s all for. The legacy. What’s left for others but also for my future self.
I’d have to say so far my lesson in being an artist, so far is the importance of patience , and not comparing myself to others. Comparison is THE demise of so many creatives understandably- It’s very easy to look at the talented people surrounding you, and compare their journey to yours, but if you’re able to have the discipline to focus on your own journey —- seeing others win will only empower you, and keep you excited about what can happen for you.
When people see me and see my work, I want them to know that everything I do is rooted in love & is for my people.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Leimert Park is always the go to when I want to show somebody some culture in the city. It’s such a wholesome environment. There’s fire restaurants, pop-ups, some of the most beautiful live performances I’ve seen, etc. I love it.Outside of that I’m a huge nature person, so going to the beach is always a great time finding a nice trail to hike , all the typical LA girl things lol
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Family is a huge part of my story.
Kellie Robinson (Mamom)
Charlie Mack (Dad)
Kierston Clark (Brother)
DaTiana Guerrero (Sister)
Aaron Ramey ( Cousin)
& so many more
They all individually inspire me in ways I will never be able to truly verbalize the way I want to — I love them deep and they all take part in who I am today and who I will be in the future.
