We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendel Dawson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kendel, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I believe the basis of life is creativity, everything in the world stems from someone creating an idea and working on it to its completion. I chose an artistic career because art is the best way to communicate for me. Whether it’s through songwriting, screenwriting, podcasting, all forms of media to me are the pinnacle of self expression and as an overly emotional person like myself I think self expression is important. I also am a believer of pursuing something that makes you truly happy, there’s no reason to work a job you hate because it pays well when you can easily be working a job that brings you joy. When you’re passionate about something you’ll find a way to make it work for you.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a multifaceted creative. I make music, I screen write, I podcast, I have talents that I haven’t tapped into yet. My main passion is music, ever since a kid I’ve had a love for music and the creation of it. The thing that sets me apart form others making music is the relatability and vulnerability in my music. When I write songs it’s from a perspective of this has happened to me and the best way to communicate it is to put it out by song. I think “other people have also felt these emotions too so maybe my songs can help them be true with their experiences”. I’m still on the rise as an artist so I won’t say I’ve found professional success in it just yet but I’ve found spiritual success. I’ve learned to become more honest with myself, how to express my emotions properly, and more. The biggest challenges come when you’re thinking to yourself is it worth it? Like am I doing something that’s going to benefit me in the long run? And I realized what keeps me pushing is seeing other people’s experience to my music. I have a friend(I hate using the word fan for some reason) in Argentina and he found my instagram and messaged me to say that he absolutely loves my music. I didn’t even know my music left the country so the fact that someone from Argentina told me they love my music was mind blowing. Some people came up to me in a club and was like “KD Sizzle we love your music” and it absolutely blew my mind. Those types of experiences make it worth it for me. Seeing the positive impact I have on other people from across the world makes me feel like a superhero. Being a creative isn’t the easiest because it’s hard to make money off your creativity, but I believe if you are passionate about your craft the financial success will follow. I want the world to know I’m just a guy from Delaware making music, I don’t know anyone in the industry I want to get into but one day I will. chasing your dreams seems scary but it’s scarier to sit back and ask “what if I chased my dreams”. So just do it. Your story is a great story and it’s authentic, you are the only you so you already have the rarest thing in the world which is your own life. If you asked me back in 2020 when I started making music if I expected to be as far as I am today I would say no. Life has a funny way of working out for people, and so far it’s going in my favor.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout my family, they always believe in me no matter how wild the risks seem. My parents wanted me to be an astronaut but they fully supported my dreams in the arts. There was never a moment of pushback from them and for that I’m ever so grateful. My siblings are some of my biggest supporters, they make sure everyone knows that their brother is doing X,Y, and Z! I wouldn’t be as confident in myself without them. My niece and my nephew motivate me every single day to keep doing what I’m doing. Every time I do something their first response is always pure amazement and their support keeps me going. I promised that when I make it big time I’ll get them all the candy they could ever dream of and I’ll get them both a Tesla. My friends who I consider family at this point are a huge attribution to my success. I can’t name all of them but Lucas, Justin, and Kira keep me sane. Whether I need motivation, inspiration, or anything these are the three people in my life that I’m extremely blessed to be able to call friends. So many people in my day to day life I’m extremely blessed to have and they contribute to my success everyday, my friends from Drexel, my friends from Emerson, My Kenyan and Cameroonian families, My hometown friends, my shoutout is dedicated to all of you who supported me day in and day out. My shoutout is also dedicated to the friendships and people in my life who I don’t talk to anymore, just because we don’t speak doesn’t mean the value in our interactions weren’t meaningful to my life. I’m thankful for everyone I come across .
