We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaimie Pangan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaimie, why did you pursue a creative career?
I like to create. I believe it is not just my passion, but my purpose. Whenever I get to work on a project I like and has the same vision I have, I get really excited. I specifically chose screen scoring because it’s a combination of a lot of things I like such as music, linguistics, art, psychology and philosophy. With screen scoring, I am able to tell a story through the language of music.

It hasn’t been easy being a creative and starting my brand as a composer, but it has been a great journey.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a music composer who loves to explore organic textures and synths, and then mixing them with strings. I get excited composing music for documentaries, dramas, horror, experimental/hybrid films, and anything like A24! I like creating soundscapes on my synths, granular synths and the like!

I consider myself in a place where I can call myself professional, but I am always looking into how I can move to a higher level professionally. It’s tough because the first years of being a composer is basically being your own PR person, manager, admin person, agent, orchestrator, and mixer. The industry is also all about networking, and not just how good you are. Also, it’s important to be able to get along with the people you are working with. It’s a people business, basically.

In terms of musical challenges, I would sometimes find it challenging to create because there are days that my mind is just blank from writing music for different projects previously. These days, I have resolved to not work on the weekends and rest, so my brain could rest too. I used to work 24/7, but it has burnt me out at one point. Being creative means getting rest as well and being bored. When I’m not doing anything music-related, I’m playing video games, watching films or tv shows, painting and just hanging out with my friends.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It’s probably gonna be more of a food trip! Like, go to a boba place and a ramen restaurant.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I thank my music teachers– they have been encouraging to me as I was learning more about music and honing my craft.
